Freedom of speech: Twitter suspends accounts from China suspected of undermining protests in Hong Kong

Twitter and Facebook crack down on accounts linked to Chinese campaign against Hong Kong

Company also suspends thousands of accounts as it reports ‘state-backed information operation’

Mon 19 Aug 2019 23.03

Twitter has removed nearly 1,000 accounts and suspended thousands of others tied to a campaign by the Chinese government against protesters in Hong Kong, the company announced on Monday.

Twitter disclosed a “significant state-backed information operation” originating from within the People’s Republic of China (PRC) targeting the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. It removed 936 accounts and suspended approximately 200,000 accounts its investigation found were illegitimate.

LOL you're denying HK'ers their right to protest by being a draconian police state and then you come cry here on PDF when you're rights are taken away??

What a hypocrite...

As I said in another thread that west is a hypocrite. Proved again.

Everyone's hypocrite in International Geopolitics. China isn't a goodie two shoes either.

I'm sure if you talked to a HK'er or two, your opinion of China would change.

Even better, talk to a Uighur or two. :enjoy:

. .
So here are points to consider...

1- Twitter is not a government entity so it is free to be selective on who is allowed on its services.

2- For any non-governmental entity, to be selective of contents does not constitutes hypocrisy regarding the higher principle of freedom of speech. It also means no non-governmental entity have power of censorship over other non-governmental entities.

3- Twitter believes -- based on its own forensic operations -- these Chinese accounts are state sponsored and designed to mislead the public about the HK protests. Twitter have not banned accounts by Jackie Chan and Liu Yifei who seemingly supports the KH police. Basically, what Twitter is saying is that Beijing is not allowed via proxies.

Hong kong has their separate law, just in case you don't know. What did I cry about? I just point out their hypocracy, but that's fine, we actually always know.

In one word, it's ok for them to do so since almost all media channels are privately owned, but it's not ok for China cause many media channels in China are state owned. Got it. But actually almost all major sociial media channels are privately owned as well in China, Weixin, Weibo, Tik tak....

.
Despite the repeated rule violations, twitter didn't do jack about Donald Trumps account. Its not only about the dearth of fairness in policy implementation, but twitter is more fixated on pushing a narrative that is seething in western approved political designs.
Never owned an account on twitter and never will.

Good that you get it.

The American context of 'freedom of speech' is that it is beyond any goobermint. That freedom predate the state and as such it cannot be taken away. When I say 'cannot' I do not mean non suppressible. Yes, you can suppress the citizenry of speech and usually you do it at least by the threat of force. What it means is that no one can convince anyone that there is no such freedom. Not even religion have been successful at it. If you allow individuality, the freedom of speech is innate.

But actually almost all major sociial media channels are privately owned as well in China, Weixin, Weibo, Tik tak....
Then pro goobermint Chinese are free to take it out on the HK-ers there. Twitter have no controls over them. :enjoy:

Because Twitter is of the West...???

Never owned an account on twitter and never will.
Ooohhh...Am sure Twitter will change its policy just for you...Not...

Well if you pile PDF with Chinese propaganda against the West. How're you not crying??

You speak of hypocrisy but fail to mention that your own draconian government heavily censors anyone or/& thing that speaks up against it??

You of all should be the last one to cry about "freedom of speech".....go ask the Uyghurs how's it working with them.

What did you expect???

It's a Western app....go make a Pakistani one and use it. China has its own apps. You should make a Pakistani twitter or a better example. :D

Dude, your government is actively involved in heavy censorship. To the point its own citizens (like you and other Chinese) don't even know about the Genocide(s) you guys are committing.

You crying here on PDF about Twitter is the last thing I would expect from a Chinese. It's like asking to be bashed upon.

That is why I am stating the truth on a Pakistani forum. If you have any problem with me exposing them, then go vent your frustration on their platforms. :coffee:

lol you're not "exposing" anyone. They're tools to spread soft image or to distort others soft image. That's already known, it's not a hypocritical thing. Like the OP has made it out to be.

Everyone, including China, does that.

.
Now even the few brainwashed mainlanders who laid flowers at the Google office in Beijing when it closed down its business in mainland China should understand that it was the right thing to do to kick this bloody US deep state operation out of China.

.
Funny, websites like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube etc. are blocked from mainland China under its censorship policy. People who visit these websites have to use VPN and are considered illegal. And now they are protesting they have the right to express their view. Ironic.

Private or government ownership doesn't matter as it comes to right to freedom of speech. The freedom is not defined by Twitter company. It is absolute. Twitter suspending accounts amount to censorship.

The point here is that twitter must lay out its terms and conditions unambiguously and be liable to answer questions about their actions of censorship. Twitter saying that its supports free speech but doing opposite is an act if betrayal.

In case of Hong Kong, both parties are state sponsored. Hong Kong riots are sponsored by UK agents whom UK left behind in Hong Kong as Fathers of church, businessmen etc in 1997. The twitter propaganda about Hong Kong is also sponsored by CIA. Banning Chinese state sponsored propaganda while not banning USA state sponsored propaganda is double standards.
