Dhaka, Mar 10 (bdnews24.com) The Indian government has awarded education scholarship worth Tk 15 million to 1,350 heirs of Bangladeshi freedom fighters.
Junior minister for liberation war affairs A B Tajul Islam and high commissioner of India to Bangladesh Rajit Mittar gave away the scholarship cheques to the selected students of Dhaka division at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Gulshan on Thursday afternoon.
This year, 1,000 students from bachelor level and 350 from higher secondary level were awarded scholarship. Bachelor level students would get Tk 24,000 annually for four years and higher secondary level students Tk 6,000 annually for two years as scholarship.
Some 7,000 students had applied for the scholarship this year.
The Indian government has been awarding this scholarship since 2006-07 academic session to the heirs of freedom fighters, and 2,879 students have won the scholarship so far.
Speaking on the occasion, Tajul Islam said that sympathy the India government for Bangladeshi people was expressed through the scholarship programme. "We are very thankful to them (Indian government), as they helped us during the Liberation War," he added.
The junior minister hoped that friendship between the two countries would get stronger in the future with this kind of schemes.
"The nation is looking up to you for bringing glory to the nation," the junior minister said addressing the scholarship winners.
Rajit Mitter said that India would come forward to help Bangladesh in similar way to strengthen the bilateral relation between the two countries.
"India accords much importance to friendship with Bangladesh," he added.
He also remembered those who laid down their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh.
Among others, Deputy High Commissioner of India Sanjay Bhattacharya and Indian defense advisor Brig Gen Nayar were also present at the programme.
