The Arab customs union is a customs union announced at the Arab League's 2009 Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Kuwait in order to achieve a functional customs union by 2015 and an Arab common market by 2020 and to increase inter-Arab trade and integration.

The announcement was made by the head of the Arab Customs Union Committee, Saud Al Jefeiri, who recently presided over a two-day meeting of the committee at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
Participants in the meeting discussed the customs union plan and the structure of the customs union and reviewed the legal structure and regulations for the union. The union will lead to the establishment of an Arab common market.

Al Jefeiri, who represented Qatar at the meeting, said most Arab member countries agreed to put forward an implementing plan, Egypt and Morocco asked for an independent accord to govern the customs union.
The Arab customs union resolution contains 17 chapters and 179 articles regulating economic and trade relationship between Arab countries, and aims to boost trade and investment among member states.

Hope bureaucracy don t kill these projects.Countries lack of interest is another issue . Majority of time these project start with full thrust later they become part of govt office shelves . In next five years thousands of Saudi foreign graduates will come back to KSA. Huge majority of these student are graduating in the field of Electrical and Mech technologies. Lots of foreign workers will lose job in middle east in next five years. Plus this project will help to adjust these graduates .

Its easier said than done. Case in point the European Union, ASEAN, NAFTA, etc.

There's going to be too much loss of power for the smaller Arab states, who will think their manhood just receded 5 inches.

The reason the EU got together was economics; Europe was devastated by ww2, with the Soviets on the east side and the US on the west with their continental massive industrial capacities France, West Germany, and the lower laying states didnt have much of a choice.

The US couldn't let the godless communists industrialize Eastern Europe before the French or Germans could, so it was pleased behind the scenes.

But then again.... Money does talk, and people love money, it helped Europe get together why not the middle east?

Trade pacts the greatest worthwhile if they are between a 'Global North and a Global South'. The North guarantees to the world that the products in the South will meet the quality controls of the North. While the South gives it's cheap labor to the Northern corporations making factories all over.

But to even get to this point, there needs to be the testing. The smallest and best way would be to integrate the economies and ease up on the tariffs. Just this step alone will signal to the businessmen/ women that the 2 countries are attempting to boaster their economic dependencies with each-other.

An interesting read. http://i-epistemology.net/attachmen... Prospect and Problems of a Common Market.pdf

Govt main objective is to fully take over the mineral resource projects. Avoiding technical blackmailing from foreign giants.

It will take a while for Arab countries to think as EU. First they have to resolve the regional conflicts. Which seems not going to happened in coming years. But Suadia and Emirates are good enough to be called Arab region.

From what I have seen in this forum, arabs in different countries do not like each other, they are all trying to prove they are better than other arabs. Thats just what I am feeling.
