France wins A$50bn Australia submarine contract

This system produces approximately 1/1000 of the detectable noise of previous submarine and allow to increase by ten times the sensivity in detecting other submarines.

State of the art tech + good "local production" package + smart diplomacy (at least no big mistake) + TRUST = Win !

Congratulation to both Australia and DCNS :victory:

TBH, I am really surprised france won this deal. Thought Japan will win it due to Political reasons. Plus the U.S/U.K(BAE/Babcock lsrge presence in Australia) were vying for Japan to clinch this deal.

Congrats to France, they beat all odds to clinch this deal. That's a big surprise.
@Vauban , @Louiq XIV , @Taygibay , @Picdelamirand-oil , seems this year will ne France's biggest ever arms exports/deal signed in history. Keep it going. European tech at its best. Germany wasnt far behind either. Kudos.

Hey man, why you always bring irrelevant topic to discussion? Derailing the thread is not allowed in PDF, understand??

This deal is related to Asia pivot of USA, my friend. Australia is ally of USA in Asia. USA troops can stationer here in Australia too. Indirectly NATO has supported USA.

Come on, the thread is about Australia's submarine deal with France, Germany and Japan. It has nothing to do with US Navy's pivot in Asia. Pls stop derailing the topic.

Per your theory, even a thread on Australian food can be linked to US pivot in Asia, because: Australia is ally of USA in Asia. USA troops can stationer here in Australia too. Good food in Australia is important to the US troops.

If you want to talk about US Navy's pivot in Asia, you can create a new thread, but not to discuss it here. We all need to obey the PDF rules, understand??

Its simple logic.

Chinese members say on this forum that Chinese is high IQ people. Why can't you understand this simple analogy , my friend ?

High quality Australian food/film/opera/sports is important to US Navy's pivot in Asia, it's also a simple logic. So you must believe to derailing every Australia-related thread to the topic of US Navy pivot in Asia is allowed. Right?

Indirectly NATO has supported USA.

Must be real indirect then cuz ... Oz is darn far from the North Atlantic To be HOnest.

@GS Zhou US Pivot/shift to Asia, not USN solely mate! But this small correction won't
suffice to have your opponent suddenly make sense, I'm afraid!

And good day all ( hello Mikey  ), Tay.

Im afraid our Vietnamese buddy is right to some extent. The U.S wanted Japan to bag this contract for obvious political reasons and to further the alliance/interoperability between its 2 most important Asian allies Japan and Australia. However, the Japanese made a huge blunder by opting to build the subs in Japan instead of Australia, unlike the french and even German bid.

This is the only reason Japan didnt win this contract. Australian leadership obviously thought it will be better off for their country to go with a more viable/profitable bid built locally, than opting for a bid which will just be assembled in Australia from Japan. Irrespective of political or geo political considerations. So its Japan's own fault nobody else.
Its similar to our defence Giant BAE who thought just because its a British company our government will automatically award them the multi billion dollar contract for over 600 armoured vehicles for the British Army. They opted to build it in Sweden since they already had plants/equipments building the CV90 in Sweden, instead of proposing a bid to build them locally in Britain itself. At the end of the day they were shocked we awarded the contract to General Dynamics UK branch.. After that it was too late for them to turn back. :stop:

Australia's mandating that US Fire control and weapons systems be put on any class of submarine it buys, right? This condition being because of their familiarity with US systems and their use of US weapons like the Mk48:

If so, then there's no need for concern about interoperability, not any more then there was with the Collins class.

...

A pumpjet's an interesting choice though. Aren't pumpjets less efficient at slower speeds then are prop and screw type designs? And aren't SSKs typically used as ambush hunters, lying in wait, as opposed to SSNs which are hunter-killers? Or is this just for SSCs like our Ula class?

Mikey mate, don't go noob troll on me, please!
We have French ships in La Royale, right?
Charles-de-Gaulle comes to mind ... and yet,
we are as interoperable as can be with the USN!
More than you with 'em or us with you as of now!

Interoperability doesn't mean owning same kit.
Cheers, Tay.

Great point, but here in this tender, aren't the Shortfin Barracuda's going to have US systems in them? In its 2015 White Paper, Australia stated they'd prefer US fire control systems and weapons be used on any submarine it purchases to replace Collins.

Its preferred fire control system was the AN/BGY-1.

Is this still the case? Do we know what major and subsystems will be on these submarines? Did Australia drop or harden its requirement for US gear given its experience and familiarity with them?

It's not hard fit, given as how our Ula replacements, built by either TKMS or DCNS will also feature systems of out choice, tailored to our unique requirements. And with Australia being a major US ally, they'd be supplied with US control systems and software without much fight.

Can you 100% sure Australia turn down Soryu sub not to do with China's concern? Although I know French sub is also more mature and more advanced than Japan. Giving contract to French is the best solution Turnbull has, cause China is the biggest trading partner of Australia. Don't drag in some bs tech blab kanal, it's about reality and politics. Congratulation to DCNS and France, well done.

We should be proud of DCNS !
Congratulations ! @Taygibay @Picdelamirand-oil @jhungary @BON PLAN @Louiq XIV @mike2000 is back @Blue Marlin

And everyone was giving the Japanese to be the winer!

France has won a A$50bn (€34bn; £27bn) contract to build 12 submarines for the Australian Navy, beating bids from Japan and Germany.

The deal, announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, is Australia's largest-ever defence contract.

The Shortfin Barracuda submarines will be built in Adelaide using Australian steel, creating 2,800 jobs, he said.

Japan, which had been a frontrunner in the contest, said the decision was "deeply regrettable".

Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said Japan would "ask Australia to explain why they didn't pick our design".

Mr Turnbull said the decision, the result of a 15-month bidding process, was "securing the future of Australia's navy over decades to come".

"Australian workers will be building Australian submarines with Australian steel."

The government says the existing Collins Class submarine fleet is ageing and in need of replacement.

A strong submarine capability is seen as vital for an island nation like Australia to conduct surveillance operations, counter growing military strength from countries like China and to support Australian allies.

What submarines will DCNS be building?
The Shortfin Barracuda is a 4,500-tonne conventionally powered submarine. It is closely related to the nuclear-powered Barracuda which weighs 4,700 tonnes.

DCNS has said the full details are confidential, but the vessel is know to be more than 90m long and to feature an advanced pump-jet propulsion system that is supposed to be quieter than propeller propulsion systems.

Mr Turnbull said the French bid "represented the capabilities best able to meet Australia's unique needs".

What were the other bids
The Japanese bid, with a consortium led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, proposed a version of its 4,000-tonne Soryu-class submarine, lengthened by between 6-8m.

Mitsubishi said it was "deeply regrettable that Japan's capabilities were not sufficiently conveyed".

The German bid, from company TKMS, offered a 4,000-tonne version of an existing 2,000-tonne Type 214 class submarine.

Relationship with Japan
The French bid received unanimous support from the various experts in the government's competitive evaluation process, Defence Minister Marise Payne said.

Japan was an early frontrunner to win the contract, thanks to former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's close relationship with his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe.

But its bid is said to have foundered because of Japan's inexperience in building military equipment for export.

The Japanese constitution was changed in 2014 to allow the export of military hardware. The lucrative submarine deal would have been its first such deal and a major victory for Mr Abe.

The Japanese government was also reportedly keen to further deepen its military ties to Australia as a counter to China's rise. Shared military technology would increase interoperability between the Japanese and Australian fleets.

The decision to reject the bid is seen as having ramifications for Australia-Japanese relations.

Mr Turnbull said he had spoken to Mr Abe and they were both "thoroughly committed to the special strategic partnership between Australia and Japan which gets stronger all the time".
