France successfully tests the M51 missile

The Triomphant (SSBN) has successfully this July 1st at 9:18,launched a M51 ballistic missile (SLBM) from the Bay of Audierne (Finistère).

The missile, which had obviously no nuclear charge, was then followed by the means of the General Directorate of Armament (DGA) and the tracking ship (BEM) Monge.
It fell in a desolate area located in the North Atlantic.

In its statement, the Ministry of Defence insists that this trial was conducted "in strict compliance with international commitments of France."

Hey why aren't you testing it in the South Pacific away from prying eyes?

Is French / France really like to be called SHE ?

It's the language. In English, countries are usually refereed to as "she". 'Mother England', and whatnot. In Latin languages, countries are usually refereed to in masculine terms as in patria, or patrie' in French, i.e., "fatherland".

Actually yes but "her" face is then that of the République as the nation :
also the embodiment of Liberty itself :

Her name is Marianne. Tay.
I didn't think of that. I thought in French, the "country" would be refereed to in masculine terms such as "patrie".

4 countries make ICBM ( incl. sub launched ) with 10 000km + range.
By order of max range : Russia, China, USA, France.

The special case with M-51 is the EMP producing heads available for it.
Does this indicate a first strike intent ... is an unresolved question.

Have the best possible day, Tay.
it may be that with a payload of 1,000 kg the Jericho III gives Israel nuclear strike capabilities within the entire Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and almost all parts of North America, as well as large parts of South America and North Oceania. Missile Threat reports: "The range of the Jericho 3 also provides an extremely high impact speed for nearby targets, enabling it to avoid any Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) defenses that may develop in the immediate region."

By throw weight, you must mean mass, young lady? If so 52.000kg

Throw weight is the combined weight of the reentry body, decoys and penetration aids and their bus, not the total mass of the missile.

The TN 75 reentry vehicle (developed for and used on M45 too) has a weight of 230 kg and it warhead weighs in at 113 kg. the M51 will carry between 4 and 6 reentry bodies. later model M series (M-51.2 and beyond) will carry an increasingly large number with the M-51.2 planned to carry around 10 reentry bodies.

Take the weight of 6 reentry bodies and their warheads, add the weight of the penetration aids and decoys - good luck finding those numbers - and add the bus and viola, your throw weight.

Though what's the throw weight of the missile?.

It's an unknown, Meap. The throw weigh, if known, would allow an adversary to plan for a specific number of entry bodies, decoys and penetration aids, which would hamper the effectiveness of the missile.

We don't know the throw weight for most missiles in service around the world, and even a number of older missiles like Poseidon C4, now only used as a ballistic missile defense target re-designated LV-2, have their throw weight unknown or left to guess work.

Actually, the way it works is that we fire at our friends by the coasts of Virginia and the Carolinas.
The 2010 test of the M-51 thus went plouf off South Carolina. Why you may ask?

Because an ICBM can be tracked in many ways including far off so that your entire flight path is at
risk. In the Pacific, over the 2 or 3 000 kliks for a small test, you're being watched!!! Big is worse.
So if we must, we'd rather have the missile launch from our waters to those of a friend with whom
we shared top tech for continued nuclear weapons production.

If you wonder how far off a missile can be followed, think of the FS BEM Monge :
monge_article_pleine_colonne.jpg

that awaits at a median 6,000kms registering flight data. You've seen it by USN ships in the Black Sea
and it also checks space as in ISS, satellites, debris and who knows, other ICBM firings.
The way the antennas are pointing is a tell-tale sign :

Alas, patrie is of marked gender or as often called feminine : La patrie.

The joys of French, there is no direct correlation between gender and marked gender.

Le Pays, la patrie, et tout ça, toussa, Tay.

P.S. @SvenS Sorry, roughly 4 tons ... but of course, with a variable load, that may vary a lot.

Well done to france! What is the advantages of it compared to its counterparts?

lol @ChineseTiger1986 in another thread saying M51 is unrealiable

I said they have to start from scratch due the previous failure of the M51.

After the next few rounds, they will start to launch the missile from the submarine, not from a water pool on the land.

Already done mate! The pool is a step for clearing surface separation BTW.
It is a necessary check prior to launching from the sub, alway tested that way.

The test that missed was the sixth and from a sub. Those since were all successes.

These missiles are specific to each nation due to specific subs MrTopal.
The Brits use an adaptation process but in our case, it is made to measures.
What it brings is roughly 2 to 4 thousand more kilometers in range, 4 more
heads which are now the TNO instead of the old TN-75 and their re-entry
tools as well as a fit on the new Triomphant subs.

Have a good day, Tay.

^^^ So as to extend SSBN patrols.

The more range, the greater the bodies of water you can hide in.
If our missile did only 4000 km, we'd have to fire from the Mediterranean
to hit Moscow ( classic Cold War example ) whereas with 6 000 km, we
could fire from the northern Indian Ocean ( by Yemen/Somalia ) and with
10 000km, we could do so from a port visit in Vancouver.

Range is thus a safety against localization of the patrol routes.

Have a great day, Tay.

The test of the SLBM is extremely strict, one single failure means you have to restart everything from scratch.

I know that France could immediately restart the test on the sub after the failure on May 2013, but it seems they took the conservative approach, with to first re-test on the water pool, then moving on the sub.

The exam on the sub needs to have launch spree of 5 out of 5, then M51 could be redeployed.

bullcrap, one failure doesn't mean you start from scratch  get multiple failues in a row like the RSM-56 yeah sure
