France ‘Must Act Bold,' Land Troops in Libya Before Daesh Comes to Europe

France must take bold actions and crush Daesh (Islamic State) militants in Libya before their influence grows stronger in North Africa, French journalist Philippe Bonnet wrote for Boulevard Voltaire.

Currently there are around 5,000 Daesh militants crawling around in Libya, according to the country's Interior Ministry.


HIS Jane's magazine reported back in December that Daesh considers Libya as the most favorable country into which it could expand and establish its regional North African "caliphate."

That's why Bonnet thinks it's time for France to start acting bold.

"If we want to defeat [Daesh], we need to smash it in Libya and not allow terrorists to seize the country, the destruction of which we, ourselves, contributed to," Bonnet said, according to the Boulevard Voltaire.

The author believes if Daesh controls the North African coast, they'd hit Europe next.

According to the author, airstrikes won't be enough, this time European soldiers should land on the Libyan coast and fight Daesh on their soil to prevent the jihadists from coming over to Europe.

Although only France, Britain and Italy can act military in Libya, the rest of the European Union (EU) should pitch in and help a future anti-Daesh operation financially. The key is to "act as quickly as possible," Bonnet argued.

Security has been on high alert in Europe since the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, carried out by Daesh militants.


In late December 2015, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni warned there was a possibility of new terrorist attacks across Europe in the future.

Daesh is considered one of the most serious threats to global security. In three years, the terrorists have seized large parts of Iraq and Syria. They have also been trying to establish their presence in North Africa, particularly in Libya.

I think this 'they are a tribal society' explanation can be over-done. In that sense nearly every society in America and Europe is 'tribal'. The same for China and its family clans.

LOL, now everyone who wants to achieve objective will cite ISIS as the sole cause. Even people robbing banks in the ME are leaving leaflets around claiming it was an 'ISIS' attack to 'punish the infidels'. Political parties fighting over control are also following such methods.

Obviously in this case it's about the oil. God knows how ISIS appeared out of nowhere and took a coastal city. Either way, the country is in a mess, France won't get involved in my opinion unless they want to take big responsibilities and deal with the consequences. Which no country seems to want.

Libya is failed state, nobody is going to intervene. If EU wants to take the toll it will have to do the dirty work, deal with insurgency, rebuild security institutions, form a government everyone will be content with, etc....more than what France can deal with.

-Give them air support.
-Help them with intel and special forces on the ground.

Excuse me but when I ignore my realist perspective; imperial powers should not have been there in the first place centuries ago. There is no ex-colony state today that does not face any vitally painful internal issues outside North Atlantic.

Ex: Gaddafi was a dictatorship, yes that's undemocratic. But he kept all these sh.it within his country either with ease or harsh ways. When we were bombing the place back to stone age back in 2011 ( and including all other coalition members participated to Ops Odyssey Dawn, Elany, Unified Protector i.e Romania, Turkey); we didn't just bombed his loyalists, we destroyed the entire state structure within, with starting off from their defense capabilities first (if they had any).
