FPCCI likely to shift headquarter from Karachi to Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: In a move that is likely to be opposed by the businessmen of the port city, the leadership of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) has decided to shift its head office from Karachi to Islamabad, as all the relevant government departments are stationed in the federal capital.

However, a final decision in this regard will be taken after the FPCCI’s general body meeting scheduled to be held next month.

Talking with journalists on Friday at the federation’s capital office, FPCCI coordinator Mirza Abdul Rehman said that 85pc of FPCCI-recognised chambers, associations and trade bodies have demanded the federal chamber to shift its head office from Karachi to Islamabad.

“The major reason for this demand is that all ministers, diplomatic missions, head offices of regulatory bodies, including DGTO, SECP, FBR and SAARC CCI etc., are in Islamabad,” Rehman said. “Times have changed and industrial and commercial centres are branching out, contrary to the situation some decades ago when Karachi was the only hub of industries and commerce.”

He said the demand was also one of the promises made by the Businessmen Panel (BMP) during its election campaign.

“Besides, we have also announced a reduction in the license fee of trade bodies and women chambers; all these agenda items will be discussed in the upcoming meetings of the executive body as well as the general body scheduled to be held in the first week of August,” he said.

Meanwhile, sources said that FPCCI President Mian Anjum Nisar has already started to discuss the issue of shifting the head office to Islamabad with the members of various chambers of commerce and trade associations to obtain a positive response to the proposal.

The FPCCI general body consists of one member from each registered trade association and one from each recognised chamber of commerce of the country.

FPCCI was established in 1950 and its members include 59 chambers of commerce and industry, 17 women chambers, nine chambers of small traders, 130 trade associations and seven joint chambers across the country.

FPCCI HQ shifting slammed

KARACHI: The All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA) has strongly denounced the proposal to shift head office of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) from Karachi to Islamabad, a statement said on Saturday.

The PFVA termed it “deep conspiracy” against the businessmen and the most important platform of the trade bodies to keep it away from the economic hub of the country, it added.

Reacting to the proposal of shifting head office of the FPCCI from Karachi to Islamabad, PFVA Patron-in-chief Waheed Ahmed said that the group running FPCCI now could not manage to get any financial relief to the business community affected by the coronavirus pandemic, particularly SMEs and small traders.

Karachi is the economic hub of the country, generating 70 percent revenue for the federal government. The sea port plays a vital role in export and import of various commodities, besides fruits and vegetables and; hence, most of the problems of the businessmen of this city also relate to the federal departments located in Karachi.

I am a Karachiite....Is it a good move?

@pak-marine @Areesh @Starlord @Armchair

Are the justifications given above are reasonable?

Btw, naval war college is also in Lahore but not in Karachi

By 1995, staff course was declared as career milestone resulting in increased induction of officers in PN Staff College; making it inevitables to shift to a proper building. At this time, it was decided to shift the college to Lahore to enhance maritime awareness among the general populace and academia. Pending construction of purpose-built campus, a building on the Mall Road was acquired, altered to meet the purpose and inaugurated in August 1996 as Pakistan Navy War College. 25th PN Staff Course commenced at Lahore in August 1996.

Don't worry. No one can kill Karachi's business spirit, try however much they can. Our Gujarati businessmen will set up shop in Jodia bazaar and start a full fledged spice and cotton import export business to South Africa and Dubai by the time these folks set up one industry. The up country folks cannot do business, they can only tend to their lands and crop fields.

So what will happen if FPPCI head office is shifted to Islamabad? Will they get more empowered or become superman that will bring great deals for Pakistan?

Ask Pakistan navy to make war college in Karachi, if you're supporting this.

What navy college has to do in Lahore when there is none in Karachi?

Does Lahore have a sea, stretching from Lahore towards Wagah?

You are talking like as if karachites were sea warring nation, 90% of them are not even natives to Sindh. With your logic only southern baloch and sindhis should be allowed in Navy. College is place to learn and then apply that in to real world/sea.

.
This is getting ridiculous. Why are you moving HQs away from your main hub? What's the need?
Jis city ko capital hona chahye tha, its being treated like a step child.

You are talking like as if karachites were sea warring nation, 90% of them are not even natives to Sindh.

So are Punjabis sea warring nation? Why they are given opportunities to learn? You didn't get my point due to your biasness.

We were not natives of Sindh AT ONE TIME...Now, we ARE.

College is place to learn and then apply that in to real world/sea.

So ONLY Punjabis will learn, not natives of sea?

Why there was a need to SHIFT instead of making another separate FUKIN college in that FUKIN Lahore?

This is getting ridiculous. Why are you moving HQs away from your main hub? What's the need?

I don't know from which city do you belong...But THANKS a ton for being logical and raising your voice for Karachi.

This city has given SO MUCH to this Pakistan and showed UNQUESTIONED loyalty and look we got in return?

May I ask from which city do you belong, ma'am?
