Rameswaram (TN), Oct 5 (PTI) Four fishermen from Tamil Nadu were injured when they were allegedly assaulted by Sri Lankan Naval personnel in the Palk Strait today, police here said. The fishermen were part of a group from Mandapam, near here, who were fishing in over 100 boats in the Palk Strait when the incident took place, they said.

The Sri Lankan Naval men damaged the fishing nets and took away their mobile phones, police said, adding the injured have been admitted to a private hospital. There had been a few incidents of attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy in the past few months.

Last month, state police have registered a case against "unknown" Sri Lankan Naval personnel for allegedly assaulting fishermen and robbing them of their fish catch in mid sea. PTI Corr/SSN VS.

The area is so sensitive still.

So its upto the fishermen not to venture into others backyard.

Most of the modern fishing boats are equipped with GPS system .

From the fishermen's point of view, straying takes place inadvertently, due to sheer ignorance about maritime boundaries. At times, the drift is because of engine failure or strong currents.

At the same time however, quite a few Indian fishermen engage in free floating to exploit marine resources in Sri Lankan waters, knowing fully well, the risks involved in crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Sri Lankan waters have rich untapped shrimp and other marine products. Growing markets for marine resources and increasing investments back home have emboldened Tamil Nadu fishermen to take risks.

If the fishermen cite difficulties in identifying the IMBL, then Indian Navy's proposal of fitting Global Positioning System (GPS) in every boat should be implemented. GPS provides the fastest and most accurate method for fishermen to navigate, measure speed and determine locations.

The governments of India and Tamil Nadu could share the costs of installation, with a little contribution from the concerned fishermen. The local administration should take the responsibility of creating awareness of its usage among the fisher folk.

It is appreciable that the state government has already approved a pilot project of Rs7.7 crore to fit GPS devices on board the fishing vessels from the Ramanathapuram district, from where a majority of fishermen set sail towards Sri Lankan waters.

Coast Guard and Navy should look seriously into such incident. If they were in Lankan water than they could arrest them. I know such thing happen but it should not next time.

Chennai, 18 August, (Asiantribune.com):
A delegation of Sri Lankan fishermen, who are on a four-day visit to Tamil Nadu to end the animosity between the fishing folks of the two countries over fishing in the Gulf of Mannar sea, appealed to their counterparts in Rameswaram not to use the banned fishing nets like trawl and Pursein nets while fishing in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Straits.

The 25-member Sri Lankan Fishermen Committee, comprising representatives of Tamil fishing community from Jaffna, Kayts and Vadamarachi in the island nation and representatives of various Non-Governmental Organizations held discussions with the fishermen of Pamban, Rameswaram and Thangachimadam in the Island town of Rameswaram and also with the representatives of Tamil Nadu fishermen Associations to sort out the issues arising out of fishing.

The Sri Lankan team appealed to the representatives of the state fishermen not to use the banned nets during fishing in high seas that will deplete the marine wealth.

During the talks, N J Bose, General Secretary of Tamil Nadu Fishermen Federation and U Arulanandam, State Coordinator of Alliance for the Release of Innocent Fishermen, appealed to the Lankan Team not to attack the Tamil Nadu fishing boats.

But the Lankan Team expressed their deep concern over snapping of Sri Lankan fishermen’s fishing nets in the high seas by Tamil Nadu fishermen and appealed to prevent recurrence of such acts.

They invited the Tamil Nadu fishermen and the representatives of fishermen associations to visit Sri Lanka to see their living condition and also for the next round of talks.

Both the sides pressed the Sri Lankan and Indian Governments not to arrest the fishermen in case of poaching in the territorial waters of respective countries by the fishermen.

The Sri Lankan Team will hold discussions with the fishermen of Jegadapattinam in Pudukkottai District, Nagapattinam and also in Chennai.

The Sri Lankan team is expected to hold discussions with the officials of Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department in this connection.

Play your regional power diplomacy with Bhutan not with Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka allowing India in for any kind of project always a big sensitive issue.

Until now Sri Lanka delaying the CEPA Deal with India.

Your Foreign minister expected to visit Sri Lanka last month but unfortunately India provided a report to USA, until now the visit of your Foreign minister delayed.

New Delhi knows about Sri Lanka then you.
