They cant read first page of Quran, they dont know names of prophets, they dont know basic knowledge of Islam that every Muslim learns as a child. They are in it for pleasures and money. A religiously motivated person is stubborn in idealogy. They moan and cry like whores before being hanged. You are right few are swayed by twisted propaganda and join their ranks. That is how they recruit. But these recruits know it soon. Most are used as suicide bombers before they realize truth. This is why most suicide bombers are teenagers.
