Four Mi-25 attack helicopters for Afghanistan: India’s bold move

External threat is good for internal stability of a country. That said, we don't really need pakistan as buffer. We can deal with instability in our own terms,.

On topic, I dont see the harm in transferring the entire Mi25/35 fleet to Afghanistan, there atleast it will be used for some purpose, here there are just running exercises.

That's what pretty much all the rajas said in the past. And paid very very heavy price.

Nothing new.

And $tupidly, Bharatis are taking bricks out of that wall to build their own homes. Without realizing that once the wall collapses, there will be nothing left to protect their own homes.
Hardly. In 2-3 years the first AH-64Es will be inducted by the IAF- the Mi-25/35s of the IAF are effectively obsolete so nothing is lost in transferring a few to the ANAF.

Why couldnt america offer some vipers to Afghanistan in the form of aid?? These obsolete heils from India wouldnt enough for their needs..

Because of Pakistan!!! Stronger Afghanistan means Deadliest foe next door. Stable Afghanistan means complete isolation irrelevance of Pakistan itself in Asia. Think.

And these 4 are like opening the flood gates. We will test the reaction of Pakistan China and Afghanistan government too. As after ghani took over power he tried to bring in Afghan talibans back to power. It's very visible when he tilted towards Pakistan The safe heaven for good talibans and their leader ship. Today Iran too carry out shelling into Pakistan border to take out launching pads deep inside Pakistan border region. Afghanistan does it too. Pakistan will do everything to keep Afghanistan as an unstable state.

This post shows utter disregard of geography and history.
Perhaps those 5th grade sarkari school books to blame?

Both Pakistan and Bharat are $tpid in this.

Historically the whole region has suffered greatly when Afghanistan was unstable.

Instead of learning from our 3000 years history, we are all further fanning instability in Afghanistan by encouraging one faction over the other.

Pakistan today for Bharat is what Great wall of China was for Chinese stability and protection.

So far Indians are building roads in Afghanistan. So are the Chinese. Infact the Taliban did nothing but destabilize the region although it could have been worse.
I don`t think India wants to destabilize Afghanistan or Pakistan. Rather support of a democracy is better than support for taliban. The taliban, if they want power and want their issues addressed should enter politcs. Fair and simple. Why do they get or want absolute power when they are not absolute?
I agree with you that Pakistan is stupid on its policy towards Afghanistan and taliban. but India has pretty much done what China has done in that region. India does not need Afghanistan as a base against Pakistan. Only PA sees Afghanistan with strategic vision.

Spot on I agree with you...Althoigh I have disagreement with you in many areas..But it is a fact, that Pakistan is a great wall of China for us....The only way terrorism in India is possible is either home grown or imported from Pakistan...So it is a hard fact and sometimes India fail to acknowledge to Pakistan and its army...

Think about a situation that if Pakistan do not exist, then all these Taliban, AL Queda and all these non sense terrorist group would have been fighting with India...And inspite of Pakistan being a Muslim nation, these nuts terrorist is not sparing Pakistan...So think about India.

This is good for the Afghanistan because they can strike the Talibaan hard with the gunships. This will lead to peace after Talibaan suffer caululties. When there is peace in Afghanistan then all the Afghans can go back to their country and then we can have a peaceful Pakistan like the early80s, where Western Tourists roamed free without security.

During the visit of Afghan National Security Advisor, Mohammad Hanif Atmar to Delhi later this week, it is expected that India will announce the transfer of four Mi-25 attack helicopters to Afghanistan. As per agency reports, an Indian security official has confirmed that, “We are going to give them the helicopters, this is a one-off arrangement”.

Afghanistan’s military has been in dire need of helicopters. Besides approaching India, Kabul had reportedly asked Russia directly for the same. Even earlier, US had purchased smaller helicopters from Russia for the Afghan air force but that was stopped after Moscow intervened in the Ukraine.

Afghanistan during President Hamid Karzai’s rule, sought military hardware from India but the deal did not go through during the UPA government. The equipment requested by the Afghan government in 2013 included tanks and artillery to boost land-based firepower; Kabul had asked for helicopters but these were for medical evacuation and not attack helicopters.

By agreeing to transfer attack helicopters now, India will send a strong signal of cooperating with Afghanistan in its fight against Taliban. The Since the Taliban leadership is based in Pakistan and Pakistan continues to support the Taliban leadership, it also sends out a strong message to Islamabad. Such a deal would need the tacit approval of the US, and because the equipment is of Russian origin, the transfer will have to be approved by Moscow. With so many countries coming together, notwithstanding the number and vintage of helicopters involved, the transfer assumes greater geo-strategic significance.

Another indication of the significance of India’s decision to transfer the Mi-25 helicopters is the critical shortage of attack helicopters in its own inventory. India’s Mi-25 helicopters are the export version of the old Soviet Union’s Mi-24D helicopters and were inducted in the No. 125 Helicopter Unit of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in May 1984. They were deployed against the LTTE during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka. Their usage during the Kargil War, however, brought out their limitations as the Mi-25 has a service ceiling of 14,500 feet.

Besides Mi-25, the IAF also has the Mi-35 attack helicopters which are the export version of Soviet Union’s Mi-24V helicopters. There are currently two units of Mi-25 and Mi-35 helicopters; they are army assets for use with Strike Corps although they are still manned, controlled and operated by the IAF.

Both the Mi-25 and Mi-35 helicopters are obsolete now and need replacements on priority. They will be replaced by the 22 Apache helicopters – PM Modi signed a deal for them with Boeing during his visit to the US in September. They will form part of the IAF inventory. The army has also asked for an additional 33 Apache helicopters for its three Strike Corps.

The first Apache helicopter will be inducted in the IAF after two years. Once India transfers the four Mi-25s to Afghanistan, there will be a shortfall of attack helicopters for India’s strike corps operations till the Apaches are inducted and operationalised. That India is willing to leave that gap in its offensive military capabilities in order to help Afghanistan indicates the importance Delhi attaches to defeating terror in the neighbourhood.
