Four cops accused of rape inside police station complex

Chhattisgarh's Dharmjaigarh town on Thursday was outraged at alleged rape of two girls, including a minor, by four policemen within the police station complex earlier this week.

A first information report (FIR) against the policemen was filed late Thursday, the town's police said, adding that the small town in Raigarh district, about 280 km from here, was tense. Angry crowds have been camping at the police station since Thursday night, insisting that the four policemen be handed over to them.

The girls, who were quiet since November 9 when the assault took place, mustered the courage to speak out Thursday and were escorted by a furious mob when they went to the police station to file their complaint.

The girls were allegedly raped inside a house in the police station complex on the night of November 9 but were coerced into silence by threats of dire consequences if they spoke out, an official said.

Chhattisgarh Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar said the incident was 'extremely shocking' and promised total justice to the victims.

"It's a very shameful incident. The guilty policemen will not be spared. I am rushing to Dharmjaigarh town to seek the help of the girls to identify the policemen who brought a slur on the police force," Rahul Sharma, Raigarh's superintendent of police, said.

The girls in their complaint alleged that they went to see off two relatives at the bus stop on the night of November 9 when a police patrol team picked the men up and took them to the Dharmjaigarh police station.

The girls reached the police station to find out why their relatives were nabbed but were forcibly taken to a house in the complex by two policemen who raped them. They then called two other colleagues over the phone, who too raped them, they alleged.

True, but frankly, posting this kind of thread is nonsense. This is pure crime news, and in a country with 1.2 billion, you will find more than hundred articles of this sort on a daily basis. People getting raped, rogue policemen, disputes, mob fury, the works! But is this a detective and crime forum or what? My feeling is that this is just India obsession taken to crazy limits, but I may be wrong...

Unfortunately, all members are not as mature as you. They will post something bad about a cop in Pakistan and this war will continue. This a disturbing incident and has to be condemned . But I don't see the point of discussing such individual cases unless it follows a pattern or if it is a big menace to the society in general.

Marked rise in police torture, rape cases – The Express Tribune

During the last three years the number of cases of torture and rape by police officials has increased by 60 per cent states a new Interior Ministry report. The report was submitted in the national assembly by Interior Minister Rehman Malik.
The report states that 178 policemen in Punjab were involved in rape and other human rights violations, of which 89 of them were sent to jail.
Of the 78 cases where policemen were found guilty of abuse and rape in Sindh, 12 were sent to jail.
In Balochistan, during the last two years 10 policemen were found guilty of human rights violations and violence against women.
One such case was reported in the federal area, however no cases were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan.
Violence on the rise overall
An earlier report in The Express Tribune citing the first bi-annual report on the “Situation of Violence against Women in Pakistan 2010’ by the Aurat Foundation revealed that Punjab dominated with 2690 registered cases out of a total of 4069 incidents in various parts of Pakistan.
In July, it was reported that violence against women had overall risen by 13 per cent in 2009. At the time, representatives of the Aurat Foundation and the organisation ‘Violence against Women Watch’ (VAW) had stated:
“We have no expectations from the interior ministry or the provincial governments and their departments… but we urge the ministry of women’s development, which is under the prime minister’s authority, and the women’s parliamentary caucus, which is headed by the speaker of the National Assembly and comprises women MNAs who are strong supporters of women’s rights, and the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), which is headed by a renowned women’s rights activist, to do something to stop this terrible situation of violence against women in the country.”
