KABUL: Dozens of Taliban rebels stormed police posts in the remote northeastern Afghan province of Badakhshan overnight, killing four officers and capturing at least 16 others, an official said on Thursday.

Two policemen were injured and three others were missing after an intense battle in the mountainous province’s Wardaj district, on a lawless pass to neighbouring Pakistan, deputy provincial governor, Shamsul Rahman Shams said.

“A big number of the Taliban carried out the attacks. The police were overpowered,” he told AFP from the provincial capital town of Faizabad.

“Sixteen police were captured by the Taliban and taken away. Three others are also missing but we don’t know what has happened to them,” Shams said.

The rebels seized two police trucks and a quantity of ammunition.

Afghanistan’s security forces, including about 170,000 police, are being trained, equipped and largely paid by a US-led Nato military coalition that has about 130,000 troops fighting the Taliban.

Mostly American, the force is scheduled to withdraw by the end of 2014 and hand over all security responsibilities to local forces. When the troops leave Afghanistan will have a total police and army force of 352,000.

Compared to their army counterparts, Afghan police are undertrained and underequipped and suffer more casualties in Taliban attacks.

Looks like Afghanistan is miserably failing in ensuring law and order in the country. Its own police and soldiers are unsafe then what about the civilians.

Just another cowardly attack by the rats using the name of Islam. Unfortunately whether it's Afghan or Pakistani security forces they are both targeted using very similar tactics...

What kind of Taliban operate in Badakhshan province?
How does authorities ascertain that it was ex-Taliban regime behind the attacks?
It could very much be those forces who does not want Americans to leave!

Northern Alliance and Indians got to loose big time with departure of US forces.. and they will fight till their toes to keep Americans in Afghanistan.

It would be rather difficult to give it a precise answer. Personally I don't think it's as serious as the media would want us to believe consider this, tens of thousands of new recruits are being accepted in the security forces at any given time now out of that number we have got >50 attacks per year. I don't think it could get any better than that considering the fact that this is the period where the process is the most vulnerable. At the end of this year the ANSF would have reached it's goal of 352,000 members and from then on they will shift from recruitment to strengthening the existing units. Although the risk clearly remains, MOD has taken some major steps in this regard like embedding counter-intelligence personnel within Military units.
