Former President APJ Abdul Kalam Dies at 83: Press Trust of India

Really, a patriot in every sense of the word. R.I.P.

One of my favorite pictures of him.

He was born a human, died a human.
There was nothing "Muslim" about him.

Couldn't sleep last night like many - the nation is shocked at his sudden demise - It shouldn't have happened like this.

I owe all my fascination towards STEM in India to him - his works persuaded millions of youth like me to think positive - cherish our achievements - dream big and work hard to achieve those dreams. Will always regret the fact that I couldn't meet him in person.

We Indians owe a lot to him - the man behind the Indian Nuclear Deterrence and Father of our Ballistic Missile and Satellite Launch Vehicles Programs - One can't imagine India without Dr. Kalam. He'll be remembered forever as the Greatest Indian of Independent India and will continue to inspire our generations to come.

A true tribute to him would be us working hard and transforming India into a developed country - the India he always dreamt of!

May his soul rest in peace! We'll shall never forget what all he did for us!

I felt as if I lost some one from my family. This is an end of an era. We lost a visionary. A guide. a patriot and what not. RIP Sir. Your vision shall continue to guide us for ever. My friend told me an incident of Dr,. Kalam with shree pramukh swami Maharaj.

Once kalam called him up to ask about the well being of shree Pramukh swami maharaj. Pramukh swami told him that he is busy in giving diksha to sanyasis. Dr kalam told maharaj to give diksha to him also. Pramukh swami maharaj told him that you did not need a diksha as he is a rishi without diksha.

This is what our beloved dr kalam was.

When kalam sahab refused to sit on chair....

Once during an event, President APJ Abdul Kalam refused to sit on a chair that was designated for him--because the chair was larger in size than the other chairs!

This was one of the several instances where Dr Kalam's actions became synonymous with simplicity and humility that was the hallmark of his public life--both as India's top scientist and most loved President.

At a convocation of IIT (BHU) Varanasi, Dr Kalam was the Chief Guest and there were five chairs on the stage, the centre one being for the President. The other four were designated for the top university officials.

Noticing his chair being bigger in size than the others, Dr Kalam refused to sit on it and offered the Vice Chancellor to sit instead, according to a published account. The VC couldn't, obviously and another chair was made available immediately for the "People's President".

SHILLONG: Moments before he collapsed at an event in Meghalaya, former President APJ Abdul Kalam greeted a policeman who stood for hours as part of his security detail and said: "Thank you, buddy."

Dr Kalam's aide Srijan Pal Singh has shared in a Facebook post how the former president was concerned about the policeman just ahead of them in an open gypsy that was part of the convoy heading for the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.

"One hour into the road journey, Dr Kalam said 'Why is he standing? He will get tired. This is like punishment. Can you ask a wireless message to given that he may sit?' I had to convince him, he has been probably instructed to keep standing for better security," Mr Singh writes.

The former president, for the rest of the journey that lasted an hour and a half, kept asking whether the policeman could be signaled to sit down.

On reaching the IIM building, where Dr Kalam was to deliver a lecture, his aide found the guard and took him to meet the former president.

"Dr. Kalam greeted him. He shook his hand, said thank you buddy. Are you tired? Would you like something to eat? I am sorry you had to stand so long because of me," Mr Singh posted.

Moments later, while delivering the lecture, Dr Kalam collapsed and died after a massive cardiac arrest.

His gesture was mentioned by a senior police officer who said that the former President congratulated a Special Operation Team or SOT personnel "for being alert throughout the road trip from Guwahati to Shillong last evening."

The officer, M Kharkrang, said the policeman first "got scared" when Dr Kalam summoned him.

Dr Kalam began delivering a lecture on 'Creating a liveable planet' when he collapsed and was rushed to the city's Bethany hospital. His funeral will be held in Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, where he was born.

Such a great and humble man..your loss can't be replace....huge loss of india...Please GOD give us more Kalam..

1.Although always greeting with palms closed in namaste, he claimed himself to be a Muslim. Never heard/saw him greeting , "As' Salam Alaikum." Never-the-less, may the Merciful, all-forgiving Allah accept him in His abode.

2. We in BD will never forget that this was the man who had visioned the project to divert rivers, flowing into BD, to India's arid central zone. As a result desertification has set in lush green BD.

All his life he taught and inspired people, and even as he died he was there inspiring people.
I don't know what is badass if not that.
He will live with us and our future generations as a symbol of perseverance and excellence.

RIP Dr. Abdul Kalam
