Former Pakistani oil and gas chief Tauqir Sadiq has been arrested in Abu Dhabi on suspicion of embezzling $850m, an official has confirmed to the BBC.

Mr Sadiq will be deported to Pakistan after the finalising of legal formalities which should be completed "within days", the official said.

He denies receiving "kickbacks and commissions" between 2009 and 2011.

Correspondents say his case is linked to a similar investigation against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.

Mr Sadiq is accused of receiving the $850m (£540m) when he was head of Pakistan's oil and gas regulatory authority between 2009 and 2011, at around the same time that Mr Ashraf was water and power minister.

Mr Ashraf is accused of receiving bribes paid by power firms in 2010. He also denies any wrongdoing.

Earlier this month the Supreme Court ordered the arrest of the prime minister along with 15 officials, who are also accused in the so-called Rental Power Projects case which dates back to his tenure as water and power minister.

Flight to Abu Dhabi
"We can confirm his [Mr Sadiq's] arrest. He has been detained in Abu Dhabi," said Zafar Iqbal, spokesman for Pakistan's anti-corruption National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which has been investigating the corruption allegations.

The Supreme Court is due to begin a hearing into Mr Sadiq's case on Thursday.

Last week the court ordered a case to be registered against Mr Ashraf, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and another senior member of the governing Pakistan People's Party over Mr Sadiq's appointment in 2009 and his flight to Abu Dhabi in 2012.

In June, the court sacked Mr Ashraf's predecessor, Yousuf Raza Gilani, over his refusal to ask Switzerland to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The government accuses the judiciary of meddling in politics and launching a witch hunt against it.

In March 2013 it is set to become Pakistan's first elected civilian government to complete a full term in office.

OGRA ex-chief Tauqir Sadiq awarded 3-year jail term

RAWALPINDI: The Special Accountability Court on Tuesday awarded three-year rigorous imprisonment to Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) former chairman Tauqir Sadiq for failing to appear before it in a corruption reference filed against him. The court also issued non-bailable arrest warrants of the accused and ordered the freezing of his assets. Tauqir Sadiq, who has been sentenced in absentia, had fled abroad after the Supreme Court declared his appointment as OGRA chief illegal and ordered the National Accountability Bureau to start an investigation against him in 2011. Sadiq, who remains in the UAE, had been accused of involvement in a Rs 82 billion scam. agencies

UAE court sets date for Tauqir Sadiq extradition ruling

A UAE court will rule on June 3 whether the former head of Pakistan's oil and gas regulator should be extradited.

Tauqir Sadiq was arrested in the UAE on December 29 after fleeing Pakistan, where he is accused of embezzling more than Dh3 billion. He entered the Emirates on a baker's visa, but was tracked down following an Interpol notice.

The Federal Appeals Court will decide whether he should be extradited following a request by the Pakistani government.

Mr Sadiq was asked to submit his defence during a private hearing in the judge's office this morning.

He is accused of taking kickbacks during his time as head of Pakistan's Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority between 2009 and 2011.

The allegations made against Mr Sadiq could also lead to a criminal case against the former Pakistani prime minister, Raja Pervez Ashraf.

Mr Ashraf was water and power minister at the time of the alleged embezzlement. Mr Sadiq fled Pakistan a year ago.

On January 24 Pakistan's Supreme Court registered a case against Mr Ashraf, the country's former interior minister Rehman Malik, and another senior member of the Pakistan People's Party over Mr Sadiq's appointment in 2009 and his absconding.

The court has also ordered Mr Ashraf's arrest over another corruption investigation from his tenure as water and power minister.

Members of Pakistan's government, however, have accused judges of a witch hunt against the administration, which in March this year became the first elected civilian government in Pakistan to complete a full term in office.

Mr. Sadiq is accused of embezzling $850 Million -- If true, could such an amount be embezzled by just one individual?, without help? without political cover?

I hope this case and other cases, are fully investigated, regardless of political influence and that these investigations and their presentation in courts of law will result not just in the guilty going to prison, but create a national awareness and that this awareness will lead to legislation that will limit entirely, the influence of politicians and political parties (patronage) in the emplacement or employment of employees and directors of government owned agencies.

when you show a person kuppi during ministership and kuppi after ministership, kuppi in office and kuppi at home....kuppi in drawing room and kuppi in bed room then he becomes kuppi oriented....his whole world revolves around kuppi and other activites related to kuppi.....

such activites demand big money......50,000 rupees per month of salary for a non kuppi oriented man can be a fortune....but for a kuppi oriented man who is holding a kanjjar party in his farm house would cost him 15,20 lacs............

a person who drinks kuppi....everything is right for him....he will take u-turns and make compromises on national issues....he will tell you that he does everything in national interest...but the reality is he does everything in kuppiz interest..just like this head of oil and gas.

this man will appear in court and tell that he did everything in national interest....then why is there still loadshedding if he and raja pervaiz did everything in national interest?

if we have been doing everything in national interest....then why are we in such huge mess sir?

why will a kuppi oriented man in his late fifties who is addicted to air-conditioner take a stand for the vegetable vendor who is making a living out in the open sir?

No wonder we are in such a hole **** like this stole all our money.Imprison every member of his family. I grantee with in a week he will bring the money back.

there is no bringing back....every one is involved in it....a person who has 850 million dollars....he buys people.....1 million to A....5 million to B......3 million to C........at the end of the day when he is finished with buying people.....he still has 700 million dollars left.....he will deposit in bank.....make interest and recover all the money spent on buying people in a year.....

a man with dead conscience who thinks he will live for ever.........will do anything to fulfill his evil desires.

but sir i would like to know how much money are you planning to take in your grave???...

cause of excessive drinking your liver is already on the verge of collapsing.....

once you are on your death bed with urine pipes attached to you....even your own family members will refuse to shake hands with you...this is the real thing that you have bought.

Abu Dhabi court orders Tauqeer Sadiq’s deportation
