What's new

Former Maldives President Nasheed detained by police

.
Why would India care about whatever these people doing in their country...

because india supports a democratically elected govt than coups..u've had their tasts already india cannot leave maldives to same fate..unstable maldives is dangerous to india

Why would India care about whatever these people doing in their country...

by the way are u not poking in to india's affairs now??

. .
Why is India having this bad habit of poking nose in every neighbour's affairs....When you get the taste of your own medicine in return then start crying like a sick baby...

Tell me what have we done apart from giving asylum to a President legally elected by his people and removed illegally by Junta. He himself came for asylum.

.
Then don't start crying like a crybaby when Mumbai like attacks happen in return Hypocrites...

Yet another Pakistani threatens India with yet another terrorist attack.

Sigh! What's new?

(By the way how many terror attacks do they face from their own people PER WEEK? Do they boast about those too, like they boast about one cowardly attack on Indian civilians?)

As long as common Pakistanis like this fellow think that it is OK to threaten their enemies with terror attacks, as long as they think that such actions are justified (yes, you were justifying it), their country will continue to burn and suffer.

And it is so funny to hear a Pakistani crying about India interfering in another country's internal affair, in the same breath that he boasts about Pakistanis attacking Indian civilians. As if Pakistan never interferes in any of it's neighbours' affairs. India and Afghanistan have been suffering for decades because of their interference. All the terrorists in Afghanistan are funded by Pakistan, and the haqqani network of the Taliban is described as a "veritable arm of the ISI". The country that uses terrorists and religious zealots to hurt its neighbours can't stand it when India expresses concern over a neighbouring country's legitimate government being usurped, and tries to help its legitimate president at his request, using legitimate means at our disposal.

All India has to do is sit back and wait, the dust has not even remotely begun to settle. India got caught sleeping last year when Nasheed was removed from office, I doubt India will make the same mistake twice when/if disorder erupts again. The last 7-8 months with those Islamic radicals in power have been disastrous for India and have given an indication of how India will be treated by the new establishment. If an opportunity presents itself for India to bring in a more friendly govt then it should take it.

@Abingdonboy I completely trust our diplomats in the job they do the best.

The situation in 2012 was not like 1988, when terrorists had made a coup in Maldives & it was Gayoom himself that asked for India's Help & IN launched Operation Cactus to free Maldives.

First, it was the opposition leader of Maldives that had launched the coup.

Second, Nasheed din't asked for an Indian Intervention.

Even after this, if we had thwarted the coup & re-instated Nasheed there than it would have been seen by a common Maldivian as an Indian Hegemony to bring an Indian Puppet in power, which would only had made the Islamic radicals you are talking about much more stronger not to forget making the Chinese in better place in Maldives than India.

So, India's best option was to see the developments from the sidelines, which is exactly what it did.

@arp2041 It undermines our word. Sorry to say but they agreed and then defied. We can't let an ally to get destabilize. Look at Iran over Syria. If Indian influence can't even work in Maldives, then forget about other countries.

Same way you do for Palestine, Afghanistan and even Indian Muslims for crying out loud.

Its about as @Abingdonboy said, protecting our interests. We don't want an Islamic extremist govt at Maldives. We know how it turns out.

Ofcourse, it is all about OUR INTERESTS thats why i said that we followed the best route.

If IN was to launch an Operation on Maldives & re-instated Nasheed than though we would have gained for a Short-term but for Long-term, we only had to lose.

First, Maldivian People would have taken this as an serious infringement of there sovereignty by India. So, yes there would have been a Nasheed Govt. for 1 more year, but when the elections would have come, these same ISLAMIC EXTREMIST would have won by huge majority & would have got power for many years. Since it would have been PROVED by Indian action that Nasheed is indeed an Indian Puppet who only serves Indian Interests.

Second, Any Indian Action on Maldives wouldn't have a Local effect at all, but entire Indian neighborhood would have gotten afraid of Indian Hegemonic Designs in the region. And who would have got the most out of this Paranoia?? Yes, you have guessed it correct, it's China. Chinese Govt. would have been in such a place that without any effort, they would have gained considerable influence over smaller countries like Nepal, BD, SL, Maldives, etc. Just the way India is gaining influence over Chinese neighborhood who are fearful of Rising China.

So, Indian Govt. had to choose b/w short term Gains or Long term Gains.

Any chance for operation cactus 2.0?

India would have done it IF the former president had not arrested the Judge but he took constitution in hand so he is also somewhere wrong due to the conditions he faced. But coup is definitely wrong because it is not just anti cosnitution but also anti People's will.

India can only wait and watch till one more unrest.

Proxy power tussle between two biggies from outside. Let's just hope sanity prevails & things gets settled for the betterment of Maldivians. India has had a major influence in that country...& sounds like the leverage has been lost by India due to poor handling of the affairs in that country.

Exactly. When I hear CHina and India can become best of friends, I snicker only because that can only happen if both openly agree to it.

Former Maldivian president Nasheed walks out of Maldivian court as 'free man' - The Times of India
NEW DELHI: Former Maldivian president Mohammed Nasheed produced in a court in a power abuse case in Male, walks out of the Maldivian Court as a "free man" after hearing ends.
Police in Maldives detained opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed on Tuesday defying pressure from regional power India which had called for him to be free to campaign for elections.
Nasheed, the country's first democratically elected leader, is to be taken before a magistrate later in the day on charges of abusing his authority and ordering the arrest of a judge when he was in power between 2008 and 2012.

The 45-year-old, a former Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, says the charges are politically motivated and designed to disqualify him from contesting the September 7 presidential election.

Amnesty said the arrest of Nasheed was an example of selective justice from the Maldivian authorities and highlighted their failure to investigate other serious rights abuses in a country better known for its upmarket tourism.

"Of course political leaders, including Nasheed, should be held to account -- but the targeting of Nasheed is an example of selective justice," said Abbas Faiz, the group's Maldives researcher.

India, which moved to end a political standoff in the Maldives last month after Nasheed sought refuge at the Indian embassy in Male to avoid arrest, said it was monitoring developments closely.

"We would urge all concerned to exercise caution and restraint and not to resort to any violence or extra-constitutional means and steps which would weaken the democratic system," said Indian foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin.

The US embassy in neighbouring Sri Lanka said it was "increasingly concerned" about developments in the Sunni Muslim nation, which straddles strategic shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean.

Male has been racked by violence and political infighting since February 2012 when Nasheed was ousted following a mutiny by security forces and protests."

Even without shooting any bullet, bombs, missiles Maldives government released nasheed,Indian diplomacy at its best.So after all,it looks like there will be free and fair elections in maldives in upcoming months
