You're taking Lee Kuan Yew's quote waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of context.

That was directed at Australia which, at the time of the quote, had an extremely high unemployment rate and a poor performing economy when compared to its neighbors.

It doesn't apply here.

He's not heeding Asian nations from becoming "poor white trash of Asia".
