Forget Pakistan. China-Bangladesh is the one to watch

Nothing she writes in that article even comes close to the current and future China/Pakistan relationship, but yes Bangladesh is a valued partner.

Well she is obviously not a defense analyst - otherwise she would not write this snippet,

Bangladesh Army had inducted repatriated officers of Pakistan army who were familiar with Chinese arms. Because of this familiarity with Chinese arms, Bangladesh army preferred sourcing weapons from China.

The preference for China as an arms supplier in Bangladesh goes far beyond familiarity....and I'd say we have the same reasons that Pakistan did for choosing China as a defense partner.

.
The common factor here is India, both Indian neighbors are tired of Indian bullying and terrorism spread. Both BD and Pak know that China provides that umbrella of protection, economically, militarily as well as politically. Also I feel China can bring BD and Pak closer, as both do not antagonize each other.

Depends how the wind is blowing (just focusing on just one prevalent member to check the disparity):

Current cold relation is only a hiccup if we look at the long term perspective. An artificially created animosity, which most of the Bangladeshi people don't agree with.Let this phase to pass over, our relationship will get better than what it used to be in 1980-2000s.China and the Muslim world including Pakistan are our only dependable ally. Those who are not willing to see it are only deceiving themselves.

This is not correct.Newer generation actually hate Pakistan more that the older generation.Due to mass media exposure they are more familiar with the atrocity committed by Pak military. There is nothing positive about pakistan in reality, either old Pakistan before 1971 or epicenter of terrorism called Pakistan of today.Soft corner for pakistan exist only in semi educated or uneducated religious type of people who believe in umma-chumma brotherhood nonsense.

We are also blessed for not having a country like pakistan as a neighbor.I can't imagine the spillover effect if we were next to the widely called 'epicenter of terrorism'.Actually no country like to be the next to pakistan.Ask Indian,Afghan or Iranian.Chinese people may not tell it directly but deep down they know.:P

Socalled ''Kashmiri freedom fighters'' are illegal pakistani terrorist infiltrated in Jammu & Kashmir to create mayhem and destruction. I say good job Indian army crushing those vermin. Each and every Kashmiri separatist sympathizer should be kicked out to pakistan where they belongs. We Bangladeshis, both people and govt. firmly support Indian measures to root out the terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir.

Idiotic article. The dynamics are completely different.

BD China relations will continue to improve in leaps and bounds in the coming years but the trajectory and purpose will vary wildly from china PK relations.

I expect BD to manage its relationship with China in a balanced footing whilst also cultivating relationship with US and EU and islamic world and also with India.

BD has solitary purpose and that is economic uplift whilst also increasing its defense capability where feasible.

BD is an oasis of relative calm in a restless environment. It will not align with anyone and get involved in their squabbles.

BD to the best of its powers will keep out of trouble and forge an independent sovereign path. We are a nation of 165m with an ever integrated economy with the global system. We are reliant on no nation and we will not put our eggs in any solitary basket. BD open for business and all are welcome.

I think the quoted post of @Nilgiri is from their personal opinions.
We the members of PDF neither represent our govt nor the voice of peoples.
Rather we are the most skewed segment of population.
In my opinion the above post from @mb444 is quite close to the reality.

Most Bangladeshis don't like Pakistan, but don't mind Pakistanis. That's been my experience.

Dealing with religious Bangladeshis is a bit of a laugh though, since a lot of them do realise that as per Islam, Pakistan was well within its rights to try and surpress the Bengali insurgency. They do try and find loopholes though, but flop pretty massively at doing so.

Most Bangladeshis don't like Pakistan, nut don't mind Pakistanis.

Well as I have mentioned before - I have quite a few Pakistani friends, some of them have young families as well.

None of these friends are conservative Muslims - but in both our countries majority people observe Muslim religious precepts such as Fasting and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan, the two Eids as well as many other religious observations (including Shab-E-barat. Shab- E-Qadr etc.) as they are intertwined with our respective cultures. Pakistanis are generally more conservative Muslims in that respect than Bangladeshis at the same level of education.

Lack of education makes our people more conservative.

Lastly - I would not totally agree that Bangladeshis have a dislike for Pakistani administration. Most people are pretty neutral in that respect. However they do have a negative opinion of our neighbor country unfortunately due to various outstanding issues.

It is heartening to see that young people from the new "Y" generation in both countries are using social media to reach out to each other and diffuse propaganda existing against both populations.

If you say Bangladeshi people do not like current Pakistani people or current Pakistan as a country, it will be wrong. But if you say Bangladeshis hate Pakistan of 1947-1971, hate Pakistani action during the liberation war, hate Pakistani interference of war crime trial or support of Jamate Islami, then it is true.I find it regrettable that, most of the Pakistanis are unable to distinguish between this two.

Rohingyas crisis has started the process of distancing BD from China.
Fact remains that the bulk of BD weapons are of Chinese origin and so close military relations is required for this.
Economically China has already handed out 5 billion dollars of loans to BD and this will balloon to 10s of billions over the next decade.
Yes Pakistan relations are closer but China has a huge footprint in BD.

In the short term China-BD ties might be hit because of the Rohingya issue, yet in the long run relations with India have the potential to worsen a lot more. Millions of ethnic Bengalis live in Indian states like Assam and the rise of the far right in India place an increasing number of these Bengalis under threat. Then there is the issue of rivers and dams being constructed by India. I cant see BD-China ties therefore witnessing any serious distancing in the near future as China is a neccessary balancing factor that BD can utilize to keep India in place.

I personally love current Pakistan.Does that mean I have to love the Pakistani action in 1971 too? Have I to deny the injustice inflicted upon East Pakistan during 1947-1971 period also? No, I will not do that. If any Pakistani try to hogwash the crime committed by Pak army in 1971 or Pakistani state policy during 1947-1971, then I will certainly give response which will not sound like Pakistan friendly. But otherwise I like Pakistan as a south Asian muslim country and want close, friendly co-operation between Pakistan and Bangladesh. There are some Pakistani posters here, who talk like a typical hindutva fanatic regarding Bangladesh, they put racist caricature here, put down Bangladesh or belittle it, or claim something which only Indian hindutvas are fond of claiming. So I also give response which sometimes sound like hostile to Pakistan. If you throw rocks, than rocks will be thrown to you in response. If you say negatively to Bangladesh, then similar negative response will be given to Pakistan. If you translate that response as I am hostile to Pakistan, then I can not do much.

Asalamu Alaikum

Yeah that's how most Bangladeshis seem to feel.

Most of the racism is merely jesting on our side, most of us don't actually look down upon you (but we do have unfair stereotypes of Bengalis, but we have such stereotypes even for other Pakistanis).

As for 1971, well, we weren't the ones who started the atrocities. Bengali militants went around attacking non-Bengalis before the Pakistani military stepped in to cripple them. Not to mention separating from your fellow Muslims based on ethnic nationalism is kufr, and completely haram.

We interfere because Bengali militants committed far worse crimes and it seems pretty convenient that some of these guys are only getting punished recently, rather than after 1971.
