Modi’s politics of Gujarati pride and asmita has allowed him to further entangle his own culpability with Gujarat’s honour.
I find it quite absurd to question "Who is the author of this article?". Does it really matter if the writer is Bengali, Gujrati or from UP as long as the article points out some vulnerable sectors which we still don't have any answers of? Does the author's ethnicity changes the fact that the court, quite embarrassing to itself has failed to summon the two scums together who stabbed Wahidabano? Does it changes the fact that the criminals are still roaming free?Or would you have accept any kind of "Samjhota" if you were in position of Amalibhai? God forbids such things to happen but ask yourself these questions.Writer is Bengali not surprising. I don't understand what's the problem with these people as the guardians of "Idea of India" and in their quest for super secularism they have not only economically ruined historically one of the most prosperous region of India they also want entire country to suffer the same fate by voting against party which promises growth and development rather for Pseudo Secular partie
I do not want third term for the current government. I do not trust the third front with the country. What other options am I left with? Although knowing Modi's crime, I would choose him, because I believe in the long term, for the economic progress, he is the best. May be he is guilty, may be he is not. Gujarat is stable and prosperous now. He claims he is interested in development and not communal politics, and past decade is proof. This is all I chose to see.
May be there is some injustice, towards thousands, in Gujarat, but this is not an isolated case for an single state. It happened in UP, happened in NE, happened elsewhere, where the victims were not given justice, thousands of them. Under the rule of BJP, SP, Congress, all sorts of parties. Atleast he is not using communal politics any more. He doesn't actively appeal to a single community, any community. He doesn't try to use scare tactics, he doesn't promotes any communal group, talks all about progress and has done enough to show.
No, he does not do so directly. His modus operandi is to get his henchmen to articulate this. Our part of the country - the anti-Muslim riot hit belt around Muzaffarnagar - has been in uproar since his chief thug, Amit Shah, went around there soon after Modi himself toured those parts, preaching a savage message of reprisal. Extremely stupid Muslim leaders replied with similar stupid language and for the past few days, everything has been bolted down tight.
Am I naive or blinded to ignore the sufferings of a few for the greater good, good of the country as a whole? Selfish may be. Now if you argue that the development tune he is singing is a lie, it is another story.
More than enough evidence that he is good for nothing but for the benefit of his cronies, the capitalists. Think Adani and Ambani. That more or less sums it up, at the level of rhetoric, but at a more serious professional level, very clearly he has achieved only incremental progress over an existing high level of efficiency and development.
Most people believe he was accessory to the riots. They choose to ignore it cause they feel he can alleviate their sufferings - development. If you want to deter me from voting for Modi, prove that it is a lie.
This saddens me the most. The whole article was about this, and this only. It cannot be proved through the judicial process that he is lying, because the judicial process is broken. In what other way can it be proved that he lied? Presumably you are among the detached and clinical observers who do not believe in the evidence gathered by NGOs, nor in the evidence gathered by different elements of the media.
Are we then defining for ourselves a position where he cannot be shown to be a liar?
It is not surprising that Modi and his supporters would like us to confuse the ethical and the legal – our courts are unequipped to handle events like 1984 and 2002, and can at best castigate or express frustration at their own limits or bemoan the infrastructure of impunity, of which, ironically, they are an inextricable part. But the political and ethical question cannot be derived from the legal, and must be thought of independently. Legal impunity raises uncomfortable questions with no ready-made one-size-fits-all answers. How do we deal with a popularly elected anti-minority regime? What does Gujarat 2002 say about the quality of India’s democracy? But with the elections upon us, like the judges in Gujarat, we must make a decision.

I am capitalist in mindset, so we would have a different view point on this. I don't think it is a bad deal to give perks to big companies if it brings industries. The employment in manufacturing industry is highest in Gujarat compared to rest of the country. The most industry friendly labour laws in the country insures this trend to continue. It is not only the big industries benefiting from such policies.More than enough evidence that he is good for nothing but for the benefit of his cronies, the capitalists. Think Adani and Ambani.
Not sure what you mean by that. Gujarat neither had efficient administration, nor infra before Modi. Not to my knowledge. May be I am missing something. That more or less sums it up, at the level of rhetoric, but at a more serious professional level, very clearly he has achieved only incremental progress over an existing high level of efficiency and development.
You misunderstood. I meant if you can prove his development story is lie. I have no doubt of his involvement, to whatever degree, in the riots. I just chose to ignore it in favor of development. Most people believe he was accessory to the riots. They choose to ignore it cause they feel he can alleviate their sufferings - development. If you want to deter me from voting for Modi, prove that it is a lie.

While I disagree wholly, I do understand this point of view. Unfortunately, I do not agree, professionally, that this man is good for economic progress. I do not think that his autocratic method of governance is good for even the medium term.
Time will tell.
Is it unethical, to ignore the injustice done to some if it can alleviate many? The assumption is that he will perform better than others. Whether he would perform better, that is a separate question. But the political and ethical question cannot be derived from the legal, and must be thought of independently.
I believe a higher GDP would be a solution to all this bigotry and ruthlessness. It seems that, in the race towards higher GDP, the majority of India is willing to inject itself with the steroids of bigotry or ruthlessness . Ethics be damned.
Next, I find it strange that people gloss over all what the Congress did back in 84 and make an issue of 2002. Not that anyone was acceptable and the other not.
