How long you expect a certain country to be far more powerful than a far more populated country is the true question.

Over time with enough peace and stability, the far more populated country is simply going to become far more powerful relative to its population...compared to some earlier snapshot in history where whatever factors created something to skew away.

The skewing goes both ways too, just look at Russia's nuclear stockpile and military strength still....it is from the earlier era where it primed and peaked....and that (along with sheer land + resource size) makes it very competitive today (relative to its population) in the hard power metric.

Gorbachev was a great guy who inherited a system with some flaws, but listened to the voices of Westerners who wanted him to fail, and so Gorbachev was forced out to prevent a civil war.

Russian govt is puppet of israel and their laws and environment not support new startups, entrepreneurship and innovative businesses , they will only remain limited to oil and gas exports like gcc arab countries and weapon manufacturing which in which they will ultimately lag behind other powers due to less funds available for Rand D and mass production of high technology weapons. They have failed to diversify their economy and industry which has caused economic slowdown .They are lacking IT industry like microsoft,apple,tesla,google,huaweiand ecommerce giants amazon,alibaba etclike u.s and china have and these days technology based companies have surpassed oil and gas companies in revenue and net worth
