Obviously the anti-quarantine protests disrupted the plan. Now we all see the result of Chinese government’s concession to public opinion has once again been proven to be bad.

I really doubt the Chinese government loosen restrictions because of the protests. It takes time to plan and coordinate policies. I say at the very most the protests only brought forward their reopening plans (which they should already have) for a few weeks.

Omicrom was already spreading rapidly in many provinces in China back then (I remember it already reported 40k cases in some days?), which means that its containment measures are insufficient.
So either:
1) Forced to open up and let it spread, like HK earlier this year.
2) Take even more extreme draconian measures to stop the spread, like Shanghai earlier this year, except this time it would be across many different provinces in China.

So far the output of giving up zero covid policy in China is not good. Too many people got sick and can not work. Streets in Beijing is almost empty. Many stores are closed. The business environment is worse than lockdown time. Experts said the situation will be better when most people recover from the disease. I hope they are right.
