Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has requested Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai to include Bangladesh in the Trilateral Highway project being implemented among India, Myanmar and Thailand.

He also sought the Thai Government's support for Bangladesh's inclusion in the ASEAN Sectoral Partnership Dialogue while discussing bilateral issues during the meeting with his Thai counterpart on the sidelines of the 18th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting in Colombo Tuesday (29 March), reads a press release.

The two Foreign Ministers agreed to work together under the framework of BIMSTEC.

Momen thanked the Thai Foreign Minister for their decision to allow entry of tourists in Thailand from 1 April which would promote people to people contacts between the two countries.

The two Foreign Ministers enthusiastically agreed to hold a befitting program in celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Thailand.

Momen underscored the necessity to immediately hold the next meeting of the Bangladesh-Thailand Joint Commission to discuss and review the entire gamut of bilateral relations.

Given Bangladesh's growing capacity in the agriculture sector, the Foreign Minister of Thailand requested for export of fertilizers to Thailand, if a surplus is available. He also stressed the importance of concluding a bilateral FTA for benefit of the two countries.

They agreed to closely work for the enhancement of trade and investment. The two sides also committed to cooperating with each other in various regional and multilateral fora.

Sanghi-der mathai je gobor - eta ekhon bojha galo.

Bangladesh-ke bad diya trilateral highway korey kibhabey? Should be a quadrilateral corridor with container carrier changes at the borders (Trailer only) and no entry of commercial vehicles from other countries.

We are directly in the way in between Indian Eastern states and Myanmar, which will reduce the distance some 1500 miles.

Highway from JSR-DAC-CTG-CXB to Myanmar border is already almost finished.

Of course, knowing Sanghis, they will negotiate passing through Bangladesh for FREE!

I am a little perplexed.

I remember an old news whereby MM refused to accept an Asian Highway proposal to include BD with it directly. By Indian design, MM vetoed the BD proposal to connect BD with MM at Gundom border, and the route was finalized via Indian NE. So, the route is Kolkata to BD/ Sylhet to Indian NE to MM and to Thailand.

But, now India wants the route to go through Siliguri corridor. Otherwise, how it is possible to build a three-country highway without through the BD land?

Very funny but ill-motived Indian sanghi proposal.

Original one was always India - Myanmar - Thailand.

If Bangladesh is connecting to NE it’s a different way for Bangladesh that is separate from the Trilateral Highway Project.

Myanmar has more to loose by adding Bangladesh to the highway project.

But, dude, how can a India-MM-Thailand route be feasible without BD included? The tripartite route will add 1,500 km without BD included.

Indians and Burmese should first learn to read maps before excluding BD. A four nation route is the only solution. BD must connect with MM at Gundum and with India somewhere at Benapol, and Indian NE connects via another sub route with MM.

Anyway, the tripartite proposal is a ploy to deny BD connection with the ASEAN countries. Bloody Sanghi!!!!

You do understand NE india is still India, right? Bangladesh will still need to go through India to connect with Myanmar and Thailand.

India can go through Bangladesh or through siliguri as part of its own deal with Bangladesh.

However, our great Sanghi neighbor has already arranged with the feeble GoB to transport goods to its NE via BD rivers. Sp, from the beginning the Sanghi country planned to exclude BD, but then will take benefits out of BD river systems.

Why Bd should be obliged to go to Indian NE when the route can go via Gundum at BD-MM border.

For Indian NE connection with this route, India can make another highway from there.

Check with Myanmar. Who is interested in that trade route without India in it.

I mean we can't help if GOB is subservient to us.

Take with your Burmese lovers. You were the ones raring to having a fight with them (however justified it might be) and then whining about indian involvement? Have a direct connection through Myanmese border and kiss Rohingyas settlement goodbye.

In reality, it was BD who vetoed against Indian goods traveling across the BD land to reach Burma. So, India has decided to connect the route with Burma some point at barren NE.

Do you guys really think there is anything your NE can contribute to this three party business. NE is barren land infested jungle and hungry elephants.

I do not see any good prospect of building this highway unless BD with its vibrant economy joins it.

. .
How it is so? Would mind giving an explanation?

Bangladesh is competitor to Myanmar when it comes to business. It is building port in Sittwe and Kyaukpyu in Arabian. If other countries have access to Chittagong port will they use the ports? Another reason is Rohingya issue. They don’t want any possibilities of outward flow from Bangladesh.

.
There is nothing special for Bangladesh in this project, Thailand is a coastal state and there is a direct shipping route between Chittagong and Ranong ports.

I also don't see Thailand being interested in this highway, adding Bangladesh may have interested them but Northeast is a tiny economy. Myanmar will get some improved highway network so they have no issues.

Bangladesh and Myanmar had a separate arrangement called "Friendship Road" funded by Bangladesh to link the two countries and eventually connect with Kunming, China. A taskforce was formed in 2005, an agreement was reached in 2007 while feasibility study was conducted in 2008. Construction was supposed to start next year but looks like something happened in late-2008/2009 and the project got stalled.

BD and vibrant economy? JOKE of the century. This year you sold 10% less cars (4000 cars) and only had 8 million smartphone sales.

INDIA sold 3.5 million cars and 173 million smartphones. APPLE alone sold 6 million smartphones.

Lol, dhoti, half of those smartphones are smuggled into Bangladesh.

Why you keep mentioning cars like an idiot when Bangladesh has a tariff barrier on car sells? India's gas consumption is 1/5th of Bangladesh.

.
Abey Dumbo.. Smartphones are smuggled? DO you smuggle 5 times what you actually buy through legal channels? Only then you would match up with India per capita wise. You guys are penny wise and pound fools.

Who the duck cares if there is tariff barrier? Tell me why put the barrier, because your leadership know that if you buy cars, your forex reserves will be burned within the year on oil purchases. You dumb bangos come and compare yourself with India, world's third largest oil consumer, who spends over $150 billion on oil purchases each year but still managing good amount of forex reserves.

May be you learn to do other than stitching chaddis, to have a decent income to purchase comforts.

Lol, talked like a typical low-IQ indur.

Your largest export product is petroleum, whatever oil you import majority is exported as refined oil, not consumed within India. Your middle-class lives a lifestyle that would qualify as below poverty-line in Bangladesh for God's sake.

This is beyond the syllabus of your shakha so quit discussing stuff that makes a fool out of yourself.
