Bengaluru: Men and women employed with the aviation industry are expected to portray a rather heightened sense of professionalism and integrity. Used to the sight of accomplished pilots and courteous cabin crew members, travellers on a recent flight from Bengaluru to Delhi were in for the shock of their lives.
The incident in question was brought to the attention of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) after a Bengaluru-Delhi Air India flight for delayed by one whole hour following an argument between the pilot and a member of the cabin crew. Initial reports suggest that the two broke into a heated argument in front of the passengers after the pilot asked the cabin crew member to wash his lunchbox.
Taking note of the incident, the national carrier has now de-rostered both of its employees. It is believed that the action was taken by the airline's top brass who cited that the incident caused irreparable damage to Air India's reputation and sense of professionalism. Reports also suggest that the DGCA has taken stock of the situation and could initiate appropriate action against the two officials.
Officials associated with the airline confirmed the incident and said that both of the concerned parties have been summoned to explain themselves as part of an inquiry into the matter. Meanwhile, the national carrier's chairman Ashwani Lohani told Times of India, "This nonsense has to stop and will stop." Earlier this year, the national carrier had restricted its pilots from ordering special meals for themselves and instead take regular meals which are ordered by the airline. Reports suggest that the directive was issued after caterers complained of receiving special meal requests from pilots. Air India had further informed its pilots that they could only order special meals from the caterer in case of any medical emergencies only.
