Demanding "100% reverification" of all the entries of the National Register of Citizens, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Monday said Assam will soon become an 'Islamic state' if the erroneous list was not rectified.
"If 100% reverification of the NRC is not done, ABVP will soon launch massive agitations across the state," ABVP state secretary Rakesh Das said.
He also criticised the All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) for lashing out against ABVP when they had organised protests demanding the NRC process be stopped. "Our apprehensions came out to be true. Aasu has also admitted that there are errors in the final NRC. Why did they not support our demand of 100% reverification before the list was published?" Das questioned.
The Assam government had also demanded 100% re-check as the percentage of people left out of the draft NRC published last year was lower in the districts bordering Bangladesh.
"Finally, the people of Assam have been awarded with an erroneous NRC. After a six-year-long anti-foreigners movement and 40 years of wait, the people of Assam got an incorrect, foreigners-included NRC," the statement read. ABVP also hit out at NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela for preparing a list that secures illegal migrants in Assam instead of safeguarding its indigenous people.
Before the publication of the list, ABVP had staged protests across the state.
