What you know is totally wrong - Read where most of time Prophets (PBUH) and later Caliphs used to guide people, listen their inquiries and problems and resolve their worlds disputes.

As far as worship/praying is concerned, Muslim don't need any special place. They can offer their prayer anywhere which is clean and offer prayer in gathering where at-least two persons are present.
