Five myths about the food security Bill

Much larger number are not that poor but still spend most of their income on food. Cheap food will keep the inflation down, as well as it will enable the beneficiaries to spend on other stuff. Tons of food is wasted, which would be reduced significantly. Only thing is that whether the govt can afford it. They say they can, and untill it proves to be a false claim, there is no point in not believing it. IF they can make it in $ 20 bil as they claim, why not?

Mate where is the money for all these?? May be for 2-3 years it can be done.. But what after that?

.
cant this scheme be delayed..as the funds have not even been alloted for FSB or just directly canceled ... fact is...i have never in my life seen soo many people upset with congress ..

I doubt people are that stupid , i talked to a lot of people i even have friends in bihar and other places who are very poor , none of them buy this, it ain't the 70's , people are starting to see through it ... its only a matter time ...

Your friends in Bihar are they Urban or Rural folks
& are they rich or Poor

I'm sure they can eat their books, Stethescopes, handicraft work, telpehones etc.
May be they can't , but what DRAY said were implemented the next genereation would find better use for books and ,telephones than just 'eating' them.

.
You didnt give me the full answer.. I agree with they are giving food for the starve for argument sake.. But what if a monsoon fails?.. What are the back up projects of the government which ensures this project will go on with out hindrance.. What practical solution are you talking about?? Those food outlets have millions of tons of food grains, I agree but it will be diminished once the project took off.. Then what?? All these project is depending on monsoon and an expectation of we will be getting good harvest every year... Isnt it the biggest blunder? If not please tell me what is the Plan B of the government if things go wrong.

The idea is to give them food even if the monsoon fails. Why are you in this debate if all you can do is talk nonsense? Did they say that people have a right to food only if they have a good monsoon? :pissed:

There won't be a next generation if they all starve and die...

I didnt realized that Indians are dying by the miilions due to lack of food. Last I heard we are on the verge of overtaking China as the most populous country.

Seriously one good thing Indian government have done for 800 million poors of India and majority of PDF Indian members still are unhappy. The reason for it? It was explained perfectly by Dalit news paper editor. You guys have access to internet which mean sleeping hungry is last of your worries.

Give man a fish you feed him a day .you teach him to fish you feed him for a life time-Chhota Bheem.

Yes because fish are in unlimited quantity and everywhere right?

You dont understand Indian politics. Is 50 years of rule not enough eradicate hunger ?? The sleeping hungry was created by successive Congress governments in the first place. Now they want to be 'seen' as helping the sleeping hungry. Why now ? They know otherwise they wont win the next election. As simple as that !

.
around 25-30 percent of our population suffer from that kind of extreme poverty you mentioned above but this FSB will cover almost 70 percent of our total population WTF

Because 70% is real figure, India need to update his standard of poor people.

All of India (and south asia in general) become over populated soon after partition. So you cant blame Congress for that. This bill isn't perfect for everyone, and it seem especially for well of Indians who are not happy. But this bill is god gift for 800 million people.

I will change my name if it reaches even 1 million people. Chances are it may reach 1 thousand 'hungry' Congressi leaders !

Oh no! They can't really eat all those. And that's why we already have a Public Distribution System that covers about 27%-30% of our poor population. What Congress has done is to increase the cover to 67% of the population; FSB will use the same ill-equipped PDS network but for much larger population who are not really poor and can feed themselves.

Should we understand that 67% of our population is starving on roads while we have some 100 crore mobile phones?

Yes, instead of subsidized food, this money could have been spend more prudently on the stuffs you mentioned above.

Congress is trying to give them FOOD TO EAT so that they don't starve on the roads. Most importantly, this will give a legal outlet to remove the ugliness that while people starve, there are millions of tonnes of food grains rotting in our system. This provides a practical solution to that dilemma. This will also bring down food inflation by a good entent by opening up that supply.

I knew in the morning IndoCarob will idiotically post Surjit Bhalla's article without even reading the first post which links to a FInancial Express rebuttal of the same (basically saying he knows nothing of economics or addtion). See how true it is.

As mentioned above, 67% of our population doesn’t starve on the roads. And for the bottom 30% we already have a PDS. Congress is trying to GET THEIR VOTES.

Think about it this way: It would keep inflation down. Millions of kids who have to work to keep family fed, might go for education. Best of all, millions would not sleep hungry.

NO. The FSB is inflationary, and for very strong economic reasons. 4.7-5 kilos of food won't be sufficient for a month per person, and when they will go to market for more food grains, they will have to pay more for inflation. And those really “poor millions who would not sleep hungry” are technically not sleeping hungry already because of the existing PDS scheme which covers the bottom 1/3rd of the population. What is the real need to increase it to 2/3rd of the population, and that too using the same PDS network with all its loopholes?

But that is not the issue here. Where is the damn school dear? Do we have decent schools in every village and for all? We always run a deficit budget dear, we do not have plenty of money for running a USSR like system where state feeds all. And mighty USSR failed!! If you increase your spending here, that means you are cutting your budget somewhere else. For god’s sake give them education, give them access to basic healthcare so that they don't die untimely, give them opportunity to run small industries/business, help them earn more from multi-crop farming, give them roads so that they can access market directly, make them self-reliant, that's the duty of the state.

And if you are really concerned about the starving poor, then fix the loopholes in existing PDS. Build proper warehouses, and help the BPL fellows who are already supposed to get the benefits of PDS, but not getting it properly because the system is flawed and ill-equipped. 67% is a ridiculous figure and shameless election politics, nothing else, which will hurt the poor most for a long time to come.

What????????? Please explain.... Which part did I talk nonsense? I am asking you doubts.. If you are unable to answer it, leave it.. Do not go back to your usual comments..

You don't know much about this stuff do you? You're just BS-ing. You're the first person in the world who says that more suplly at lower prices will actually increase market prices. My recommendation is that you write a convincing paper on this- the guys in the nobel committee may want to see that.

I didnt realized that Indians are dying by the miilions due to lack of food. Last I heard we are on the verge of overtaking China as the most populous country.

Oh they AREN't. They're really all eating and living healthily- caviar, wine etc. included.

I will change my name if it reaches even 1 million people. Chances are it may reach 1 thousand 'hungry' Congressi leaders !

Researching new names will be a good idea. It won't reach 600 million for sure, but one million is a given.

It seems notable economist Jagdish Natwarlal Bhagwati, RBI Governor, RBI Technical Advisory Committee, and many more economists, financial analysts, and technical analysts of several respected financial institutes share my view on this. If you had any idea about my education and profession; you wouldn't have questioned my understanding of economics.

I will be waiting for your esteemed opinion about the other points that I have raised.
