Some popular species of fishes, especially Ruhi, Katla, Mrigel and Kaliboush released record quantity of eggs on Thursday night in the river Halda, the lone natural fish breeding sanctuary in the world, reports BSS.

These fishes usually release eggs between March and June, said experts, adding though mother fishes took long time to release eggs this year, its quantity is sufficient.

Halda expert Dr Monjuril Kibria told BSS that the fry-collectors collected over 25,600 kilogram of eggs in the early hours of Friday, which is record amount in the last 20 years.

Reduction in man-made calamity like indiscriminate hunting of mother fishes (egg carrying fishes) and river pollution is the major cause of the huge amount of the eggs released this year, said Halda expert Prof Monjurul Kibria of Zoology Department at Chattogram University, who has been carrying out massive research work on unique character of this river and its fish spawning.

The river Halda is the only natural breeding ground in the world where sweet water species like these fishes release their eggs at a certain period of the monsoon over a century.

The pleural of FISH is also FISH (not fishes)

. . . . . . . . .
"25,600 kilogram of eggs"
I am not very sure about the implication of this large 25.6 ton of fish eggs. How many fish fries (not the exact number, but possible ones) can be born out of this huge tonnage of eggs? Any idea?

I once read somewhere that much of harvested eggs goes to waste due to heat & lack enough infrastructure to properly hatch them. Good half of these eggs will be wasted. But rest of it will go all over BD as far as Kustia-Jessore- Satkhira region.

Yes, you are right. I now remember about fish hatcheries. There are many in Satkhira areas and our fish farmers in Faridpur collect fish fries from these hatcheries to raise varieties of fish in their ponds.

Incorrect. Fish and fishes both are used as plural in different circumstances. BTW, your spelling for 'plural' is wrong.

These would have been wasted anyway if left in the natural environment. As far as I know many hatcheries use their own fish for the egg production. It's collected from Halda probably because of the desi variety of fishes that taste much better.
