9 May 2011
New Delhi, May 9 (ANI): With the United States naming Major Iqbal among the five persons having key roles to play in masterminding the terrorist strikes on Mumbai in November 2008, the Indian Government has said there should be no doubt now about the role of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the mayhem that claimed over 300 lives.
A second charge sheet was filed in a US District Court in Chicago on Monday in connection with the Tahawwur Rana case. It named Sajid Mir, Abu Qahfa, Mazhar Iqbal, Lashkar member D and Major Iqbal as persons wanted in connection with the 26/11 case.
The dossiers have been handed over India, which has asked for voice samples of four of the five people (the exception being Lashkar member D). New Delhi maintains that Major Iqbal was working for the ISI to plan and execute the 26/11 terror attacks.
India further claims that Sajid Mir was probably in the Lashkar control room during the 26/11 attacks, while Abu Qahfa was a Lashkar trainer who imparted GPS-handling and map-reading techniques to the attackers.
All accused were charged with one count of conspiracy to murder and maim in India, while Mir, Abu Qahafa and Mazhar Iqbal have been additionally charged with conspiracy to bomb public places in India.
None of them are in US custody.
The revised indictment comes three weeks before the scheduled May 16 trial of Rana, a Canadian citizen who is accused of using his First World Immigration Services business to provide cover to Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley, to scout targets for the Mumbai attack.
Headley pleaded guilty in March 2010 to 12 criminal counts, including aiding and abetting the murder of Americans in Mumbai, and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution in a plea deal to escape the death penalty.
