ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday appointed its permanent representative to the United Nations Tehmina Janjua as country's new foreign secretary, confirmed the Foreign Office.


Tehmina Janjua, who is presently serving as Pakistan representative to the UN, will take charge as foreign secretary from the first week of March, the Foreign Office said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif approved her appointment after vetting all names for the key diplomatic post.

She will be replacing incumbent Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry, who has been designated as country’s envoy to the United States.

Pakistan’s ambassador for the United States Syed Jalil Abbas Jailani has relinquished the charge on completion of his contractual period as ambassador in Washington. Rizwan Saeed Sheikh will be acting as Charged D’ Affairs in Washington till the arrival of Aizaz Chaduhary in the US capital.

Besides Tehmina Janjua, Pakistan's High Commissioner in New Delhi Abdul Basit, former Chief of Protocol and Ambassador to France Ghalib Iqbal, country’s ambassador to Denmark Masroor Junejo and Pakistan’s High Commissioner for United Kingdom Syed Ibne Hasan were the other contenders for the post, sources had previously informed Geo News.

Pakistan has graced its permanent representative to the United Nations, Tehmina Janjua, as the country’s new foreign secretary, according to the Foreign Office.



It is nothing short of historic, since this is the first time Pakistan has appointed a female candidate for the job. After vetting out all the names for the key diplomatic post, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif himself approved Tehmina’s appointment.

According to the Foreign Office, Tehmina Janjua will take charge as the foreign secretary from the first week of March. She will be replacing Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry, who has been designated as the country’s envoy to the United States.

Tehmina Janjua – A Profile
Tehmina holds a Masters degree from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad and Columbia University, New York.

She joined the Foreign Service in 1984 and her experience has mainly been in multilateral diplomacy. She is a seasoned diplomat with a career spanning over 32 years.

In 2011, she also served as the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She served as ambassador to Rome from December 2011 to October 2015. Apart from that, she has not had any significant bilateral postings.

After her return to Pakistan in 2015, she became the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in Geneva.

On the Contrary High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit was the senior most as per the Seniority, Tehmina Janjua was 3rd or 4th on the list...
