What's new

First upgraded MiG-29 to be delivered to India this year: Sukhoi Chief

Serious question. I saw a couple of videos of the MiG-29 fly, and in nearly all of them, the engines left black smoky streaks. A documentary said it was because the engines didn't burn cleanly. The videos were from the 90's, do they still have the same engine model?

Yes unfortunately. The original RD 33 engines do produce the blackish smoke you're talking about. If you can recall even in the initial flights of the JF17 there is black smoke.
this problem does not exist in the RD 93 (JF 17) and the RD 33 mk 3(upgraded migs)

.
^^ RD-93 is just a variant of RD-33 . The upgraded Mig's are using RD-33 series 3 engines which claimed to be eliminated the smoke problem.

There was a picture to accommodate more internal fuel

^They'll porbably order more. The mig29K is out of this world. The IAF migs are incomparable.

considering the capability of this fighter.. why no body wants to increase the number .... is there any particular reason

^^ thats pretty good...
and it is high time we need to increase the number of Mig29...

Mig29's in IAF were primarily employed as air superiority fighters, before the induction of Su-30MKI. They are still used in that role, but now we have a far more capable aircraft & IAF wants to utilize the Mig29 till the end of their lifetimes. There is no point in inducting more Mig29's.

might be because IAF migs are supplemented by our Mirages

Aren't IAF Mirages used primarily as strike aircraft following their spectacular run during Kargil War? IAF was so impressed that they wanted 126 more Mirages, but then the tender was expanded to include more manufacturers- the MMRCA!

Mirage 2000s are multirole aircraft - they are primarily used in the IAF as tactical strike platform but can engage in air combat as well.

MiG-29s on the other hand are developed as pure air superiority fighters. They are meant to provide air cover for up to 100 km behind enemy lines. Remember, in the Soviet military doctrine the frontal aviation (which includes tactical fighters, ground attack aircraft, and utility) was seen as a mere extension of the ground forces.

However, IAF doctrine is changing. Instead of many different types of aircraft with specific roles (like MiG-27s for just ground attack and MiG-29s for just air superiority), the IAF wants fewer types with mutirole capabilities (like the MMRCAs).

For this reason, IAF will not induct any more MiG-29s. Although the newer MiG-29SMTs/UPGs and MiG-29K have ground-attack capability, they are just air-to-air fighters first and foremost.

but know its a different story the IAF wants fewer types with mutirole capabilities and there is no mirage 2000's any more dassault had stopped the production line and offered Rafale

What is up with the back of the plane? Perhaps they are incorporating more composites? Looks different from the yellow primer that you ordinarily see on un-painted parts of planes.
