First phase of ballistic missile shield to be deployed in 2012

Y. MALLIKARJUN
HYDERABAD, March 22, 2010

Notwithstanding the recent failure of the interceptor missile test, the first phase of the indigenous Ballistic Missile Defence System to intercept and destroy incoming enemy missiles of less than 2,000-km range is expected to be deployed in two years.

Disclosing this to The Hindu recently, V.K. Saraswat, Director-General, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister, said the first phase would be made operational through the new concept of ‘capability-based deployment.' The Air Defence Programme has been divided into two parts — depending upon the threat perception. While the first category of threats pertains to enemy missiles with less than 2,000-km range, the second type belongs to those with more than 2,000 km. Both the phases will have two layers. The aim of the two-tier system is to first destroy an incoming missile, at a higher altitude, in the exo-atmosphere above 50 km. If that does not happen, the endo-atmospheric interception will take place up at the height of 30 km from the earth.

The DRDO has developed the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) missile for exo-atmospheric interception and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) system for endo-atmosphere interception.

With a fresh interceptor missile test in the endo-atmosphere planned in a couple of months, some more trials were planned for 2010-11 and 2011-12 to ensure reliability, repeatability and suitability for deploying phase-1assets, Dr. Saraswat said.

Simultaneously, DRDO scientists have started work on phase-II solutions. It requires radars of longer range and new hypersonic interceptor missiles flying at Mach 6 with agility and the capability to discriminate against ballistic missile defence counter measures. “Our effort is to have interception at very high altitudes, and the entire system will be able to handle multiple, simultaneous attacks,” he said.

A crucial requirement for the second phase is a floating test-range — a complete launch station from which interceptors will be fired. Scientists have started designing the ship and associated systems such as radar, mission control centre, launch control centre, communication network and many other equipment needed for phase-II trials.

The ‘capability-based deployment,' under which a system would be put to use, as it got perfected, had paid rich dividends for some countries, Dr. Saraswat said. The entire work on the two phases was planned to be completed by 2016.

ya good news for us, first secure ours then to next

the timeframe for interception is 3-4 mins, even less for targets nearby. Unless you invest in building something like what Boeing is building with lasers, its one giant waste of money.

Indians keep building technology that can't be used. I fully expect the army to turn down this shield, as it gives a false sense of security.

I'm certain they are bluffing to counter act Pakistan's threats to go nuclear if we are attacked.

Just because You cannot make one does not mean that Other should not, every other developing country is trying to make a defense shield, and More over For Your Kind Information we are also working with something thats Called KALI(Kilo Ampere Linear Injector), KALI is getting weaponised as a part of ballistic missile defense shield program....

So Dont say that making a Ballistic missile shield is useless... If your only motive is to troll, you are more than welcome in here sir, enjoy your day

Abey pehle bana toh lo.. fir deploy bhi kar lena...

I seriously think that these types of news should be toned down. Testing of the BMD is taking place and we are talking about its deployment. Not done man...

Once the testing is satisfactory we can think about deploying it. Before it all is hogwash...

I don't understand your point here Asim, the interceptor requires only a few seconds to lock on and fire. If India can build enough of them (and enough ballistic missiles), it would seriously 'deter' Pakistan from firing missiles that might not even hit their intended targets, while inviting a retaliatory strike from our side.

I don't think we'd invest billions into a system unless we saw a potential use for it, its a different matter altogether if the DRDO can't deliver on its promises, which they have as far as the AAD and PAD are concerned.

Didn't India invest too much into Arjun and LCA and their all turn out to be failed projects. But India has so much money that its ok to fail many times. India should focus on joint ventures as it has some success. If it wants real success, India should just buy from the USA.

This is the difference between USA and RUSSIA, USA wants everyone to be under them, Russia is trying its level best to help us bring up... And moreover R&D is not gonna harm our economy.... And LCA and Arjun are very well alive no matter how many times have been this said and brought up this question again... So if ur intentions are to just display your furious mind, U r welcome to do so

LCA and Arjun are failed projects. I hope Indian scientists are more honest than you. The biggest lie is to lie to yourself. But look at it this way, at least the Indian scientist know its mistakes. Failed once doesn't mean that India will always fail. But before India succeed, it must admit to its failures. Otherwise, how is India going to learn.

If you could have gone this forum itself regarding LCA and Arjun, you could have saved lot of your time and energy.

You are complaining about an MBT which is competing with one of the the worlds best tank T-90.... If DRDO was not confident about Arjun , it would not allow Arjun to challenge T-90... but the trial are going on...

Lets come to LCA, LCA got delayed by changing preference of IAF... LCA will get operational clearance...

Just do not troll for the sake of trolling...

I agree with you.
Going by the way, I guess VK Saraswat has a habit of boasting.

Get rid of your naivete. If Putin can bring India under Russian paw, he will.

Precisely. And US is the one that wants to keep India neutral because India will never join the US camp.
