Iranian military aircraft targeted a U.S. Predator drone over the Persian Gulf this week, administration officials said. It was the latest in Iranian efforts to thwart the U.S. military's airborne intelligence collections efforts in the region.

Three administration officials have separately confirmed details of the incident, although the Pentagon has not publicly acknowledged it.

The drone was flying in international airspace off Oman when Iran detected it and launched its own manned aircraft, according to the officials who have direct knowledge of the incident. The Iranian planes then shadowed the drone, which eventually left the area. No shots were fired. However, the officials said the U.S. is concerned about Iranian intentions in incidents like this and whether it could unintentionally trigger hostility.

"They have done this before. We are fully prepared to defend our aircraft. We were definitely in international airspace," one of the officials said.

In December 2011, a highly sensitive U.S. Sentinel drone gathering intelligence on Iran's nuclear program for the CIA was captured by Iran after it crashed. In November, an Iranian warplane fired on a Predator over the Gulf.

The U.S. account of the incident comes after Iran's Press TV reported Tuesday that its military "identified and repelled an American U2 reconnaissance plane that was trying to intrude into Iranian airspace above the Sea of Oman." U.S. officials say, in fact, that it was a unmanned

Predator drone involved in the incident. They point out that the U2 is a high-altitude manned reconnaissance plane that Iran would find very difficult to detect.

The use of U.S. drones so close to Iran remains a highly sensitive issue for U.S. military intelligence. The aircraft are capable of using sensors to gather information about Iranian military movements. There have been a number of previous encounters.

They have no shame. They send drones only miles away from Iran's borders,a country which is at odds with U.S,then they claim it was in international waters and at the end, thanks to their mainstream media,Iran is the guilty and 'provocative' side, while defending its boundaries.

U.S. fighters warn Iranian jet trailing UAV

An American fighter jet verbally warned an Iranian F-4 on Tuesday as it pursued an Air Force MQ-1 Predator over international waters.

The MQ-1 was flying unarmed reconnaissance over the Arabian Gulf when it was approached by the F-4, Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement Thursday. The Iranian jet came within 16 miles of the unmanned Predator. The Pentagon said earlier today that the U.S. fired a flare to warn the Iranian jet, but amended that statement.

Two American fighter jets were escorting the Predator and warned the jet, ending the situation. All American aircraft remained in international waters, Little said.

Last November, an Iranian Su-25 jet fired on an unarmed MQ-1 in international waters, according to the Pentagon. After that incident, the U.S. told Iran that it would continue to fly the surveillance flights and “we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward.”

Wow the Iranians got scared by a flare.

And Iran has the right to defend its borders... if an enemy plane is in "international" waters and couple meters away from Iran, then Iran has the right to send its fighters...

Genius....... Escorting MQ-1 with fighter jets............ :omghaha:

On serious note following results can be concluded from this new article

1- Fighter are their to protect them from shot down by Iranians.
2- Fighters are their to shoot down MQ-1 if it is hacked by Iranians.

But i like it , Iranians have made US look like stupids .

??? Stealth fighters escorting drones on a reconnaissance mission? Shouldn't the fighter jets just do the recon mission if the drones are 'hackable' as you presume?

. . . .
Why was an MQ1 sent for reconnaissance?
Maybe these drones can be equipped with an Argus-like system that could look into Iran without violating its airspace.

thanks man, very interesting point, by using the fighters to escort the UAV, they have contravened the very first goal of creating drones.

Your second reason doesn't say so. Genius.

Those were the reasons that could make americans genius .

Actual question was Y bother sending in drone if you spy using a fighter plane that can be very much protect itself and prone to hack by iranian.

Get the picture .

Its more a show of force to Iran. You got to be dumb to assume they will always fly like that.
