ya i heard talk for underground mass transit in lahore islamabad and other cities good fou country if we could able to build a proper underground mass transit system in lhr

.

What are they talking about?Underground system has become out dated?Oh come on man...

So Lahore metro wont be grade seperated? If then it wont be considered a mass rapid system
What are they planning?A suburban rail or an an LRT(That can work on BRT tracks)something like this?

It would be much cheaper than a MRTS,but wouldnt carry much commuters. Also,it would be s problem at at grade crossings

The MRTS that they are talking about is for 2 lines (NOT touched by BRT). This has especially come to interest French, Malaysian and Chinese firms.

I'm not exactly sure how they think the Present BRT line can be used for MRTS. It has a couple of intersections there.

What i'm guessing is that of the Present 27 km BRT line, the 8 km elevated section will be used to connect to a new line for MRTS and the 19 km ground line used for BRT line would be as is and connected to a new route.

Ok,but the article states They are not going for underground, then what are they going to do?Elevated?that will cost as much as underground..

Also can an existing elevated road be converted to a metro rail track...?I m no expert in this.

Their plans are always changing. I'm sure NOT everything would be Ground. As far as i know the roads are narrow therefore not accommodating double track and there would be lots of activists who believe trees should not be cut. They will have to put in few Km of Underground. There are also some activists who believe that building Flyovers in the Heart of Historic Lahore (where major focus would be) is destruction. I myself would stand up with them.

@cb4

Is that possible for such flyovers to support weight of metro rail infrastructure?(tracks+a stantard guage rolling stock+support for tracks+elecrification? Also trains cannot climb the sort of gradients flyovers have

take a look at the tracks

Wasnt Lahore metros orginal plans were LRT based??

The first plan was approved in 1997 with Japan under Sharifs. When Sanctions were imposed on us in 1999, Japan backed out.

The second 'so called plan with the help of China' came in 2006 under Pervez Elahi the CM of Punjab. Later it was found that there was corruption and the project was just for publicity.

The third plan was approved by Shahbaz Sharif, CM of Punjab in 2008. Funds and development was arranged with NORINCO China in 2009. We had to back down because the federal government under PPP and Zardari did not provide sovereign guarantees. As Sharifs found out that the elections were near, they made 1 BRT line in Lahore in 11 month to win votes.

Now that Sharifs are back and this time in both provincial and federal government, there should be no interference. They have announced to build BRT in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and support Sindh government and JICA to build Circular Railway in Karachi. Up until now the news above is a surprise for me. I guess they want MRTS in Lahore now as it maybe the real demand.

this has to be underground but current structure could be used for mass transit train system

Good to see that some firms are still interested in working with Pakistan for the metro system. Anyways I hope Alstom of France wins the contract. Alstom has a metro train manufacturing factory in India in Gujarat which is for serving Asian customers. Would love to see trains of Friendship manufactured in India going to Pakistan. Win Win for everyone.

Listening to this for 2-3 years now!

I have heard govt officals saying this many times that infrastructure was built keeping in mind that one day we may move to train

Good news. But I do not wish lopsided development. While the size of the pie is small, I would not want an expensive project for Lahore. Already there is much griping for too much spending in Lahore. Once we achieve 6%+ growth, we can think about such projects in tandem with some development of rural areas.

6% wont come if you don't invest in such projects. Remember the more you build and the more you consume the more you grow. So spend more the grow more. Basic laws of economics.
