Finally, The Economist speaks!

"Mas'udis remark about Muslims residing in Pala domains is significant in the context of these commercially and politically expansive Buddhist states, for by the tenth century, when Bengal textiles were being absorbed into wider Indian Ocean commercial networks, two trade diasporas overlapped one another in the delta region. One, extending eastward from the Arabian Sea, was dominated by Muslim Arabs or Persians; the other, extending eastward from the Bay of Bengal, by Buddhist Bengalis. The earliest presence of Islamic civilization in Bengal resulted from the overlapping of these two diasporas." (Richard M. Eaton - The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier 1204 - 1760 (Oxford - 1997)

And anyway all major Buddhist sites and monasteries were in West Bengal(just as all major everything else!). Atish Dipankar Srigyan who established Sarma lineage of Budhhism to Tibet was an ancient Indian Bengali.

Atisha is most commonly said to have been born in the year 980 in Vajrayogini village in Bikrampur, the northeastern region of Bengal (located in modern day Bangladesh). Bangladesh is also in possession of his remains. His ashes were brought to Dhaka (modern-day Bangladesh) on 28 June 1978 and placed in Dharmarajika Bauddha Vihara.

An all-party meeting convened by chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday discussed the issue of rechristening West Bengal but could not finalise a new name. There will be yet another round of talks on August 19 in the state assembly.
Several names were discussed during Wednesday's all-party meeting held at Writers' Buildings. "Several names like Bangabhumi, Paschimbanga, Bangapradesh, Bangadesh and Bangla figured in the talks, but we couldn't finalise a new name," said a political party leader who had attended the meeting.

Bangladesh is East Bengal.

When there is no East Bengal, what is West Bengal since it has no co-relationship with any entity?

Since you are a know all, do suggest some names for West Bengal.

Maybe Adi Bangabhoomi?

Atish Dipankar Srigyan who established Sarma lineage of Budhhism to Tibet was an ancient Indian Bengali. East Bengal always had been our hinterland and rice bowl and we will get it back soon. Akhand Bharat FTW! \m/

Prof. Rahman believes that Wari-Bateshwar is the rich, well planned, ancient emporium (a commercial city) "Sounagora" mentioned by Greek geographer, astronomer, mathematician Ptolemy in his book Geographia [2]. The other emporia mentioned in Ptolemy's work include Arikamedu of India, Mantai of Sri Lanka, Kion Thom of Thailand. All of these were the most ancient civilisations in their respective regions, each was a river port, and all of them produced monochrome glass beads. The artifacts found at Wari-Bateshwar bear similarity with those found in the other emporia sites.

Pataliputra was the capital of Ashoka.. Later Pala empire shifted it to Gour which is on the border of India and Bangladesh.

Even though there is no scarcity of Buddhist archeological sites in BD. It is the people who were Buddhist and were constantly pushed towards eastwards by the Hindu expansion from West.

Eastern Bengal was not a hinterland until recently.

A student of the Archaeology department has just got an artifact (pottery).Silver punch-marked coins, different types of earthen pots, rouletted ware, knobbed ware, northern black Polish ware, black-slipped ware, common ceramics, semi-precious stone beads. Iron artifacts include blooms, hand-axes, spearheads, knives, nails and slugs, melted pieces of iron. Totally false. Buddhists were never 'pushed' by Hindu expansion. It is just that mainstream Hinduism was always more in majority compared to us. But even then we always co-existed peacefully. This myth spread mostly by Hindu-haters that they "exterminated" Buddhism is an utter lie.

Buddhism started seeing its downfall only after it was institutionalized by a few high priests who completely twisted the meanings of the teachings (in all schools of thought within Buddhism). If you doubt this, then take a look at southeast where Buddhist priests still learn mainstream Hindu mantras and sutras, as far as the royal high priests of Thai and Khmer kings.

Buddhism was exterminated by barbaric invading Islamic forces from Central Asia and southwest Asia, starting with what is today Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since our philosophy didn't allow combat on such a mass scale even in retaliatory terms, some Buddhists reverted to mainstream Hinduism to fight back.

But throughout years, it was exterminated off the land.

Seriously, Hindu expansion? We Buddhists have been the safest under mainstream Hindu majority's protection for millennia.. And why were we ever unsafe with them? Buddhism emerged as a philosophy of peace and self-satisfaction from mainstream Hinduism, mate. Gautama Siddharatha was a mainstream Hindu and Hindus also worship Him as the 9th incarnation of Vishnu.

When organized religions become majority, we've seen what happens in not just Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also Bangladesh and even in Philippines. So save your breath.

Tshering 22,

Have you heard of that saying - Selling Ice to Eskimos?

They will now tell you, a Buddhists, as to what is Buddhism and it total history!

Yah right....

We are talking about Bengal Buddist and under Sena dynasty. Yes they did co-exist as lowest caste Hindus as Sudras. Buddism were not recognized as a religion rather a sect of Acchyut. You loved it. But we did not ...

How come there was an eastern Bengal during his time? Oh, I see, the same way as there was a Pakistan during IVC.
 @west bangali supremacist. Mamata is renaming your state to “bangabhumi” which literally means Bangladesh COPYCATS!
'Bhumi' means land while 'desh' means country. 'Bangla' is the name of a language, while 'Banga' is derived from the mythology of Prince Banga, who, according to legend, established the province of Banga.

So 'Bangladesh' would mean, country of Bengali speakers, while 'Bangabhumi' would mean a land called Banga.

Not sure which part is a copy. In any case, the proposed name of West Bengal hasn't yet been decided.

You are absolutely right.

The places where Buddhism was most widespread in indian subcontinent were regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh till invasion of marauding Barbarians. Now Buddhism is extinct from those place .
