BTW can anyone post some pics of this manufacturing facility. That would be great.. :)

Awesome

Government should impose extra tax on all electronics items those not made in India...... Only this policy can boost our production capability many times. And force every foreign player to manufacture their goods in India.

Live example is Huawei manufacturing facility in India for telecom equipment.

right, basically take india back to days before it opened its market up.

Considering India's enormous existing and potential market for mobile devices, I'm surprised this wasn't done sooner.

What is the scope or their production though, how much can they produce and how efficiently?

UPA govt, wants India to remain poor and worship one family like North Korea. BJP will get this done.

That sounds about right.

With a potential market size of over a billion consumers, it makes no sense to give away these markets and these profits to foreigners.

Chinese companies like Lenovo, they conquered the home markets first.

If India was able to manufacture enough to satisfy domestic demand alone, it might be enough to drive India back into double-digit growth territory. Since India's domestic market is so huge already.

Not only Micromax, Karbonn and Intex are also going local slowly, I think Videocon too.

Are you crazy? Why do you want the government to discourage investment into India? Remember, Indian electronic industry HAS TO COMPETE with global giants. Our current industry is rubbish except a few areas like air conditioners etc. We need external competition to ensure that indian makers are on their toes all the time.

Micromax rose to prominence by constantly competing with foreign brands in India.

If you want to bring a racer out of a dud, you have to make him run.

Basically they have started assembling locally with MediaTek processors and IPS screens and maybe even battery imported from China.

I agree.

Our problem is that the goods mostly manufactured in technology related areas is not of the quality and is needlessly expensive because of the terrible taxation that the manufacturer has to pay. It was a tax structure that was designed in the socialist era of cold war where everything was government run and government discouraged private investment.

These laws are still continuing and thus are a big problem for our industry. The reason why successive government don't remove them is because tax is the easiest way to earn revenue from people without doing any work. 'Pay tax or you'll go to jail' is the narrative and then there is no work done by lazy government employees.

If this was a government that depended on fines and levies on trade-wrongs, the government employees of different bureaus would have to be on their toes round the clock to earn their money.

But in India, a government job means that one will get guaranteed pay by working at ones own pace.

.
Only a small portion of Micromax smartphones sold in India are made in India, and that with Chinese parts and components, which makes assembling a better word than manufacturing.

India needs to invest big, real big, and fast, in the necessary facilities.
