India approves proposals for French firms to upgrade IAF fleet

NEW DELHI (PTI): The Indian government has cleared proposals worth over $3 billion for upgrading the fleet of 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

As per the proposals, French firms Dassault and Thales will upgrade the aircraft, which will add 20-25 years to the life of the Mirages, inducted by the IAF in the mid-80s.

"The proposals related to upgrade of the Mirage 2000 were cleared by a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)," a defence ministry official said Wednesday.

Two different proposals, one for the upgrade of systems of the aircraft and the other for over 400 MICA missiles for the upgraded fleet, were placed before the CCS.

Under the deal, the French firms will help in upgrading the avionics, navigation systems, mission computers, electronic warfare systems and radars bringing the aircraft to the Mirage-2000-5 standards.

The French companies will have to invest over $900 million into the Indian defence sector as defence offsets.

As per the Indian defence offsets policy, foreign vendors bagging deals worth over Rs 300 crore have to invest at least 30% of the worth of the deal back into the Indian defence, civilian aerospace and homeland security sectors.

The deal had been hanging fire for the last five years as the two sides have been involved in extensive negotiations including the price of upgrade quoted by the French side.

As per the agreement, India will first send two of its aircraft to France for upgrades and thereafter the rest would be upgraded at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited facilities here, company sources said here.

So...basically they are almost at rafale's standards. IF we select rafale, it will be 126+51=177!!! Nice move.

Not sure about that but will be definitely a big boost. But I think the important point here is that only 2 jets will be flown to France for upgrades. The rest will be upgraded in India itself. The Indian facility in the future would theoretically support Rafales.

Does Mirages have any composites used in the air frame?

close to zero.

airframe made in that era simply couldn't afford to have any.

What is 4.75 or 4.8 gen fighter jet . Any source of official saying this? . . If we start sub divide the generation . . Then every fighter will be of different gen

Generally refer to Russian standards of fighters designed between late 80's to 2000's as 4th gen and specs of F-35 and FGFA as fifth gen. Anything in between can be categorized as 4.xx generation. All a matter of reference, no official source to be honest.

^^^^^^^

exactly the F-18 super hornet Block 3 is considered a 4.75 gen fighter because of the added stealth and more powerful avionics on it

even our SU-30MKI is not considered just a plain old 4th gen fighter it is more advanced so it is a 4++ or a 4.5 gen fighter

i guess a 5th gen fighter is considered to be entirely stealth

for example the LCA right now is a 4th gen fighter the MK2 version of it will be a 4.5 gen fighter if there is ever a MK3 version it will be a higher than 4.5

Big contract for India

New Delhi had agreed to a contract of EUR 1.5 billion to upgrade its 50 Mirage 2000.

The news begins to filter in France and specialized sites in India: New Delhi would have given the green light to the contract to upgrade its 50 Mirage 2000. The final decision, expected for months, Had yet to be approved by the "CCS", equivalent of our defense council that brings together the highest authorities of the government.

For French companies, this is a major contract, since it is estimated at 1.5 billion euros. It is for Thales, which will ensure 75% of the work, to provide a new avionics, electronic warfare and radar more powerful. Dassault, for the remaining 25% of the contract will be responsible for re-qualify and upgraded Mirage 2000.

Regarding missiles, MBDA will probably have to wait to get an order of 500 to 900 million euros (depending on quantity)...

Gros contrat en vue en Inde, Actualités

The source is said to be close to Dassault and should have good infos, the costs at current exchange rates would be $2.1 billion dollar for the upgrade and $700 million to $1.2 billion for missiles (depending on quantity).

The Rafale newsblog is also reporting about this, but mainly with infos from Livefist, but the last comment is interesting:

MMRCA, India clears Mirage upgrade deal

According to Livefist, the long awaited deal to upgrade the 52 IAF Mirage 2000 to the dash 5mk2/9 standard would have been cleared by the Indian Government. The upgrade should include the Thales RDY-2 Radar but also a new modular processing unit and Mica EM/IR missiles (among other high tech items). It is worth noting that the avionics and weapon package of this deal may share some common elements with the Rafale proposal for the MMRCA. Whether it will favour (or not) the Rafale is, however, difficult to assess.

Picture : French Mirage 2000-5. The Indian version should be far more advanced and very close to the UAE "-9" version

Rafale News: MMRCA, India clears Mirage upgrade deal

Would be interesting what changes are included to make it close to the UAE Mirages and could also be a hind on why the upgrade is so costly.
