Airports Authority, ISRO commences process of Final System Acceptance Test of GAGAN

The objective of Final System Acceptance Test is to evaluate the system performance and its critical parameters in the integrated live environment using the satellite signals and ground based systems on integrity, accuracy, continuity and availability for aviation use.


16th July 2012 is a day of great significance to Indian Aviation as Airports Authority of India and ISRO has jointly commenced the process of Final System Acceptance Test (FSAT) of GAGAN – (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation)
The objective of Final System Acceptance Test is to evaluate the system performance and its critical parameters in the integrated live environment using the satellite signals and ground based systems on integrity, accuracy, continuity and availability for aviation use.
A network of precisely surveyed 15 ground reference stations INRES (INdian Reference Stations) is strategically positioned across the country to collect GPS satellite data. Using this information, the master control centre INMCC (INdian Master Control Centre) generates messages to correct any signal errors. These correction messages are then up-linked through INLUS (INdian Land Uplink Station) and broadcast through GEO stationary Indian communication satellites, which can be to received by onboard aircraft/User receivers using the same frequency as GPS.
The intense test involves using the data collected from all the 15 Ground Reference stations located across the country and satellite signals to provide necessary augmentations to the GPS standard positioning service (SPS) navigation signal.
The successful completion of Final System Acceptance Test will
pave way for further process of system certification by Regulatory authorities and formal commissioning by June 2013
GAGAN – Project brief
GAGAN the Indian SBAS (Satellite Bases Augmentation System) which is a prestigious project jointly undertaken by Airports Authority of India and ISRO in accordance with ICAO,s strategic plan to achieve smooth transition to Satellite based Navigation and seamless Air traffic management across the continents.
GAGAN is designed to provide the additional accuracy, availability, and integrity necessary to enable users to rely on GPS for all phases of flight, from en route through approach for all qualified airports within the GAGAN service volume.
GAGAN will also provide the capability for increased accuracy in position reporting, thereby making possible high-quality Air Traffic Management (ATM).
In addition, GAGAN will provide benefits beyond aviation to all modes of transportation, including maritime, highways, railroads and public services such as defense services, security agencies, and disaster recovery management by aiding in search and rescue to locate the disaster zone accurately, telecom industry and personal users of position location applications.
India is only the fourth country in the world, after USA, JAPAN and Europe to take up the challenge of establishing the regional SBAS that will redefine the navigation over India and adjacent regions. The footprint of GAGAN will cover huge area beyond Indian Territory, from Africa to Australia and can support seamless navigation across the Globe. The system is also interoperable with other such systems of WAAS of USA, EGNOSS of Europe and MSAT of Japan.
India being located in the Equatorial Region, GAGAN is the first system in the world that is being developed to serve the equatorial anomaly region with its unique IONO algorithm.
The total cost of the GAGAN project is estimated to be Rs. 7.74bn. First phase known as Technology demonstration System (TDS) was completed in 2007 at a cost of Rs. 1.48bn.

Calling it "Indian GPS" is wrong on many levels...
GPS....Global Positioning System

Its not Global,its local system,comprising of one Geo stationary satellite...

Its not a Positioning system on its own,its an Augmentation system via satellite relying totally on some other GPS..Be it GLONASS,American GPS or Gallileo. (i am not sure which)..

We used to used a similar system in 90s called "Differential GPS" which was a terrestrial "Error correction system" same thing has gone to space now...


The Ground stations are land based stations who's position has been calculated accurately..
Now same Ground station has a GPS receiver which gives reading of GPS position based on GPS signals...
As the Position of the Ground station is already known,the difference between what is shown on the GPS receiver and the Actual Known position is the GPS error at that general area at that given time...
This information will be sent to Master station which in turn will transmit it to the GAGAN satellite which will relay this value of error correction to subscribed users and or compatible Receivers..

So its just an error correction service,not "Indian GPS"

No i domnt know,but i know exactly what GPS augmentation means,and this one is only about GPS augmentation not an autonomous positioning satellite constellation..
May be the news article became victim of Indian banana journalism ...again..

It is very easy to criticise but very hard to do. At least India has ambition and plans.

yep this GAGAN is not Indian GPS system
Indian GPS is IRNSS which will also be launched shortly

But GAGAN will enhance the accuracy for airlines in south asia, middle east, east asia, Indian Ocean, Australia n some parts of africa also

It will help us to increase our global footprint as we r first in our region to provide this service

n the most important thing is i think we'll be using GSLV mk3 for its launch so:yahoo:

its only 1000cr of investment, and india today has enough buying power to invest that. Also we can return the cost if coountries like pakistan, bd and middle east are ready to use it.

gagan and irnss are 2 different thngs. gagan is augmentation system for army and airlines.
Irnss is a navigation system. irnss-1 and irnss-2 sats are already prepared and are just waiting for their launch date.

GPS augmentation is a good service but how they will recover the investment?

such investments are not meant to be recovered but to actually save on future investments

for example...municipal authority builds a road near ur house...obv it wont collect the toll from u right??...

this system will bring down unnecessary fuel costs for civilian planes which makes airfares come down...less emissions so gud for environment which will help india with carbon credits

less import of petroleum (not really sure about this) etc etc

We need to augment our fabrication and space launch capabilities to speed up these and many other projects in the pipeline..

GPS augmentation is a good service but how they will recover the investment?
its mainly a facility for our better future n developmental purposes but i can give u a rough idea as ur answer

1.it will help us lower fuel cost of civil n military planes through much more accurate path details
2.it will provide us much better Air Traffic control at relatively lower cost(from what we r incurring now) as well as help us to handle our future increased in air traffic load in a better way without incurring much cost
3.we may charge some amount from international carriers for using our services in outside india as it will cover not just india here way a look

here is a little peak into GAGAN capabilities for u-

GAGAN is planned to get into operation by the year 2014. It will be able to help pilots to navigate in the Indian airspace by an accuracy of 3 m. This will be helpful for landing aircraft in tough weather and terrain like Mangalore airport and Leh.:smitten:
