FIFA World Cup 2022

.
I think it would be mostly a surprise if they make it past 4th place in their groups. Marocco should be able to defeat Canada and Tunesia against Australia might be a draw. Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia will finish 4th in groups.
Guess I was totally wrong.

TUE 22 NOV 2022FIFA WORLD CUP - GROUP C
Argentina--1....Saudi Arabia--2
  • Messi (10'minutes pen)
HT 1-0
  • Al Shehri (48'minutes),
  • Al Dawsari (53'minutes)

A bold and brilliant Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history as they came from behind to stun two-time winners Argentina in a fantastic Group C opener in Lusail.

Ranked 51st in the world, Saudi Arabia could have been done and dusted in the first half as Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.

But the Green Falcons flipped the game on its head in a stunning 10-minute period after half-time, Saleh Al Shehri levelling with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari firing them ahead to spark pandemonium in the stands.

Having shown their ruthlessness at one end, they demonstrated a ruggedness at the other, holding a stellar Argentina front line at bay to secure only their fourth World Cup win and throw the group wide open.

Lionel Scaloni's Argentina came into the tournament among the favourites, on the back of a 36-game unbeaten run that included winning the 2021 Copa America.

They now have it all to do to keep alive their hopes of a first global triumph since 1986 and give Messi a fitting ending to what is very likely his World Cup swansong.

They face Mexico on Saturday, while Saudi Arabia take on Poland.

And just around minute 60 or so, tied 0 - 0 Mexico vs Poland and Mexican goalie makes one of the best penalty shot stops of the tournament so far. Wow that was very impressive, keeping the match still tied.

One of the biggest upsets in World Cup history

Saudi Arabia produced one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history Tuesday, beating Lionel Messi’s Argentina 2-1 in an astonishing Group C match.

Many had expected the South American team, ranked third in the world, unbeaten for three years and among the favorites to win the tournament, to sweep aside its opponent, ranked 48 places below it in the world rankings.

All the pre-match talk focused on Messi, one of the greatest players ever who is playing in what is likely to be his last World Cup. The Argentina captain scored an early penalty to put his side in the lead, but two second-half goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari turned the game on its head.

The thousands of Saudi fans inside the Lusail Stadium couldn’t believe what they were watching as they celebrated their unexpected victory.

Such a comeback hadn’t looked remotely possible for much of the match. Argentina controlled the game after taking the lead but whatever Saudi manger Hervé Renard said at halftime worked. His team came out with a new-found belief and stood toe-to-toe with Argentina’s world-class team.

Al Dawsari’s incredible winner from distance – and subsequent acrobatic celebration – will become one of the moments of this or any World Cup and undoubtedly, in time, an ‘I-was-there’ moment for fans.

As full-time neared, fans cheered every tackle and save as if they were goals and, when the match did indeed end, Saudi Arabia fans reacted with frenzy.

Both sets of players sunk to their knees, from disbelief and exhaustion. Messi, who so many had come see play, looked distraught as he walked off with Saudi fans cheering his name ironically.

According to sports data group Gracenote, which is a Nielsen company, Tuesday’s result was the biggest upset in the history of the competition.

“The most surprising World Cup win ever according to Gracenote was USA’s victory over England in 1950 with a 9.5% chance of victory for the US team but Saudi Arabia’s chance of victory today was estimated at 8.7% so takes over at number one,” it said in a statement.

As much as this was a historic win for Saudi Arabia, it was a humiliating defeat for Argentina who capitulated on the biggest stage.

Saudi players smiled and laughed with reporters as they left the stadium, a stark contrast to the Argentine squad who walked with their heads down onto the team bus. Messi was one of the few to stop and speak to journalists and even stopped for photos.

There was also more good news for Saudi fans who believe in a touch of destiny.
The last three teams to beat Argentina at a World Cup either went on to win the competition – Germany and France in 2014 and 2018 respectively – or reach the final – Croatia 2018.

“I’m feeling very proud of my team. This is one of the craziest games I’ve seen in my whole life,” fan Yazid Aldakheel told CNN. “Beating Argentina, one of the best teams in the world, it’s like a dream.

“Playing in the World Cup is good, beating Argentina is something else, it’s a different world.”

Argentina will hope to recover against Mexico in its next group match on Saturday, while Saudi Arabia faces Poland.

Denmark and Tunisia fail to score

In the second match of the day, Christian Eriksen made his return to major international football as Denmark kicked off its World Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against Tunisia in Group D.

The Manchester United midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch at the European Championships last June and his return to international football is nothing short of miraculous.

Tunisia, who had the backing of tens of thousands of fans, held on for an impressive point. Denmark improved in the second half and had a goal ruled out for offside before substitute Andreas Cornelius was denied by the post. The Danes also had a last-minute penalty appeal turned down.

Don Riddell and Ali Howorth contributed to reporting.

Germans were lions of world cup in 2002

They destroyed Saudis 8 0 just like the way Iran destroys Maldives in every match

This is the worst result of world cup ever 🤦

You pathetic liar. That was/is not the largest World Cup defeat. There were several larger one. Besides Germany reached the World Cup Final in 2002. Iran would have lost 10-0.

You are so butthurt about KSA achieving more by beating Argentina 2-1 (fully deserved too) than Iran has ever achieved in its ENTIRE World Cup history that you are posting 20 year old defeats.

Iran has NEVER advanced from a World Cup Group Stage unlike KSA who did it in 1994.

Iran has NEVER won against such a strong team like Argentina in its entire history in a World Cup.

Iran has not won a single football title since 1976 (ALMOST 50 years) while KSA has won the Asian Cup 3 times and reached a record 7 finals. Only Japan is better with 4 wins.

Saudi Arabian football league light years better than Iranian football league too. Saudi Arabian football clubs dominating Asian football and winning the Asian Champions League every second year with Saudi Arabian Al-Hilal being the most successful Asian team in history.

Even Iranian fans on an Iranian football forum are praising KSA nonstop and saying that KSA has performed better in football than Iran ever has.

The infrastructure they have built in Qatar is so impressive. Insane digital infrastructure as well. Good for them. A new country, where the leader spends on his people, while ours just steals so his hooker and alcohol-loving relatives can live it up in the West.

This city is so clean! 10s of thousands of people at fan fest and in the streets and you don't see one garbage on the ground.

Yesterday, the stadium we went to for the England (Khalifa International Stadium) - is considered the worst one out of all the stadiums but it would be by far the best stadium in IR Iran now.

You are a frustrated little sad individual with enormous inferiority complexes.

The best post by an honest Iranian user writing pure facts:

Sad cold reality is that saudi arabian football has a more impressive history than iranian football. We have had much better individual players but always struggle with team work (surprise, surprise); we still talk about losing to argentina 1-0 whereas saudi arabia actually beats them. We still talk of how we almost made R 16 in 2018 but Saudi Arabia actually did that in 1994.

God I am so bummed...worst part is that, despite the players protesting, each positive news story about team melli's protests has a bunch of iranians in the comments insulting the players and telling them they are IR's team not Iran's team.

From team melli to team goh....

In 1998, 2014 and 2018 we showed very good performance

And if we forget about football

Our beach soccer team is number 1 in the world

Our futsal is one of top 5

Our volleyball is one of top 10

Our basketball is one of top 15

Our weightlifting and wrestling are one top 3

We're one of top 3 in many fields in Asia

Everything is not football and unlucky moments will happen

Yeah, but that’s why we’re all surprised because Iran has usually always had an above average team. Anyways, hopefully the next match Iran will win.

We defeated USA 2 - 1 in 1998 and lost to Germany 2 - 0

We are not that dumb to lose 8 - 0

Apart from football which you have many of none-semite black African players you are next to zero in sports ⬇️

Who is we?

USA is a joke team, even more so in 1998. KSA has a far better football history and far better accomplishments than Iran. Just today was a bigger accomplishment than anything that Iran has ever achieved in football.

Try to advance from the World Cup stage for the first time in your history and then talk. Try defeating a team like Argentina in a World Cup and talk. Try winning a title after almost 50 years time and then talk.

All KSA players are Arab and 100% locals, try again. Both goals scored by KSA were by full-blooded Arab players. Try again.

KSA/Arabs have far better football achievements and sports achievements than Iran. You only excel in useless tiny sports that are not popular anywhere such as some wrestling and steroid dominating sports like weightlifting.

With Arabs lifting all restrictions and investing in more sports, the gap will just increase, as Arabs are taller, bigger and stronger in general.

In fact I think that Afro-Arabs alone could achieve more than all Iranians put together in just athletics if investments were made. That is why small GCC states such as Bahrain and Qatar have more gold medals in those sports than 80 million big Iran.

You are just a little butthurt individual, most Iranians are praising KSA and congratulating a fellow neighbour and Muslim nation but your takfiri Shia Twelver extremism prevents you from doing that despite all your "holy figures" that you lot worship 24/7 are from Arabia.
