Fierce gun fight rages in Kashmir

The Indian army says 16 militants have been killed in an ongoing gun battle with security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Eight soldiers have also died in the fire fight, which has entered its fifth day in Shamsabari, the army said.

Several more militants were believed to be in the area, the army said.

Overall violence has fallen significantly in Indian-administered Kashmir since Delhi and Islamabad began peace talks in 2004.

Line of Control

Defence spokesman Col JS Brar said that the fighting broke out in the higher reaches of the Shamsabari range on Friday morning after troops launched an operation to flush out the militants.

He said troops were carrying out a combing operation to capture remaining militants who were hiding in the area.

The identity of the militants killed in the gun battle is not known, and there has been no word from any militant group.

The BBC's Altaf Hussain in Srinagar says this has been the longest and bloodiest fire fight in Indian-administered Kashmir this year.

A ceasefire between Indian and Pakistani troops along the Line of Control - the de facto border that divides the disputed region between the two countries - is still holding.

However, the peace process has been abeyance since November's attacks in Mumbai (Bombay) which killed at least 179 people and which India blamed on Pakistan-based militants

The gunfights were first reported on Saturday and followed a cross-border firing incident involving Indian and Pakistani troops that left one Indian soldier injured.

Pakistan and India agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control in 2003 and have since held slow-moving peace negotiations.

But the peace process ground to a halt following November's militant attacks on Mumbai that India has blamed on the Pakistan-based Lashkar-i-Taiba.

India and Pakistan have fought two of their three wars over mainly Muslim Kashmir, which is held in part by each country but claimed in full by both.

SRINAGAR: In an encounter between Indian Army troops and Kashmiri Mujahideen, an officer and seven troops were killed and many more injured.

It is suspected that five Mujahideen were also injured in the shootout.

Lieutenant Colonel J.S Brar, Indian army spokesman in Srinagar, while confirming the incident disclosed that on specific information regarding presence of Mujahideen in the area, army troops carried out search and cordon operation in Shamswari forests of Kupwara district.

The Mujahideen surrounded the troops and did not allow them to flee. In a continuous gunfight, Major Mohit Sharma of 1 Para and seven other soldiers were killed while five Mujahideen and equal number of civilians were injured.

Kupwara gunbattle ends, 17 militants killed

Six more militants were killed on Tuesday taking the death toll in the fierce gunbattle between militants and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district to 25 as the five-day-long stand-off ended this evening.

Seventeen militants and eight Army personnel, including a Major, were killed in the encounter which began on March 20 on higher reaches of the Shamsabari range in Harfada forest, a defence spokesman said.

Four soldiers and five militants were killed on Monday while an ultra died a day before. On Saturday, four troops, including Major Mohit Sharma, and two insurgents, were killed.

On the first day, three militants were mowed down by the security forces.
