What's new

Few recent pics of Chinese AWACS

Btw guys... i just spotted Y-8 over my house in Islamabad... could this be a traini for ZDK-03? or does PAF PA already operates Y-8? but dam... was that thick stream of smoke trailed almost km away so UGLY!

. .
smoke trail a problem ?...well its common in Russian engines...when Pak use RD33 engine for Thunder , that was much smoke...now they use RD93, it has less smoke problem..

As far as training scenario, Its easy for Pak engineer to look inside the machine, rather then breaking a warranty seal and pay hefty cost of re-assembling .Chinese provide proper tools of maintenance, plus changes in machines according to requirement. Very few bugs attached with that. But for any machines, European attached to many rights and warranty. No doubt, Chinese radars are not proven product yet. But we are making statement without even knowing the product. We can't mind set that Chinese defence product are inferior. After all PAF pilots successfully used Chinese Migs in aircombat against India.

what opportunity is their for us to learn? Other then handling of TOT?
Erieye even without TOT is still much better deal then ZDK-03 with TOT.. but (MONEY) is a big factor! and unfortunately PAF has to look towards cheaper alternatives.. But i wonder with 2-3 billion dollars in pocket and requirement for 10 AEWCS would the Swedes offered us TOT.

How come an imported system is better than having TOT about similar system (though not as good maybe)...?

With PAF expertise the system will eventaully become as good as erieye and the tot is added advantage.

TOT does not mean the technology is (more advance) or upgraded or gaining the capability to significantly improve it..... it has more to do with understanding the technology and the capabilities (thats it)...
Air force personals that i have talked to in "real life" have real reservation about this chinese AEW.... they say the only reason why we have decided to opt for it is because we have little money in our pocket... the original plan was for somthing like 10 ERIEYES but due to economic melt down PAF decided to cut down eirye orders.
And i dough PAF can do anything on its own to significantly improve ZDK-03 to be equally as good as Erieye.

I didn't realize that Chinese used Tail boom - actually, are you sure about this, because I don't think anybody other than US and her close allies, use tail boom for refueling?

You were talking IL-76, not specifically those in Chinese service. And you seem to be suggesting that only an IL-76 airframe equipped with a2a refuelling probe is usefull. I beg to differ:

Saab 2000
Max Range at cruising speed 2868 km (nb not with max payload)
empty weight 13,800 kg (30,420 lb)
Max takeoff 22,999 kg (50,704 lb)

Il-76D 3,650 km with max payload
Il-76M/T 4,000 km
Il-76MD/TD 4,400 km
Il-76MF/TF 4,200 km
Empty weight: 72,000 kg (159,000 lb)
Max takeoff weight: 157,000 kg (346,000 lb)

And the Saab doesn't come with a refeulling probe either, IIRC

I didn't say they did. And the European EADS group has developed a boom refueling system using "fly-by-wire" controls that is compatible with other boom systems. This is offered on modified European Airbus type aircraft that are configured as tankers (i.e. Airbus A330 MRTT for Australia).
