AFP: Japan, US to cancel island drill: report

TOKYO — Japan and the US are dropping plans for a joint drill to simulate the retaking of a remote island from foreign forces amid a row between Tokyo and Beijing over a disputed archipelago, a report said.

The governments are set to cancel the drill as it could provoke further anger from China after a row escalated when Japan last month nationalised some of the disputed islands, also claimed by Beijing, Jiji Press reported late Friday.

The decision to cancel the drill, which would have involved an island that is not part of the disputed chain, was in line with the views of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's office, the news agency quoted government sources as saying.

No official was immediately available for comment at the Japanese defence ministry.

According to earlier Japanese news reports, the exercise would have been part of broader joint Japan-US manoeuvres due to start in early November.

The drill would have used an uninhabited island, Irisunajima, near the main Okinawan island in southern Japan, and would have seen Japanese and US troops make an amphibious and airborne landing, the reports said.

Like the disputed islands, tiny Irisunajima is also in the East China Sea but hundreds of kilometres (miles) away from the archipelago at the centre of the row between China and Japan.

Japan and China have long been at loggerheads over the sovereignty of the rocky outcrops known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyus in China.

The Tokyo-administered island chain is uninhabited, but the seabed below them is thought to contain valuable natural resources, such as oil.

The dispute flared in August and September with landings by nationalists from both sides and the subsequent nationalisation of the islands by Tokyo.

Japan must adapt to China's navy moves - Globaltimes.cn

The joint exercise involving the PLA Navy and civilian law enforcement ships conducted Friday in the East China Sea came as a surprise for Japanese media, which believe the move is due to the deteriorating situation between the two countries over Japan's "nationalization" of the Diaoyu Islands.

There is no need to object to the speculation by Japanese media. The exercise has sent a clear message to the outside world, that China is ready to use naval force in maritime conflicts.

The country lacks experience in law enforcement on the sea, however, the odds of friction during maritime law enforcement incidents has been on the increase.

China is not interested in flexing its muscles on the sea while it is preoccupied with economic development. For years, it has been, and still will be, showing restraint during frictions on its borders. But this does not mean China "fears" Japan, Vietnam or the Philippines.

This time the drill involved the navy. Next time it may well expand to missile forces in a bid to increase the level of deterrence and the range.

The frequent territorial conflicts in recent years have disrupted China's previous policy that insisted on "putting aside disputes for the time being." The government has learned to launch "counter measures" one after another.

The outside world, as well as ourselves, have been adapting to a "tougher" China that has become more resolute in safeguarding its sovereignty and interests. Some predicted this change would ruin the hard-won international situation after China's reform and opening-up process over the past few decades. The prediction did not come true.

The country will only become more skillful in dealing with more provocations. What's more, the Chinese people have increasingly begun to think that some countries have been underestimating the consequences of angering China, and China needs to teach them a lesson. This growing public sentiment may pressure the government to change its diplomatic policies.

Chinese people believe there is unlikely to be any major war in the Asia-Pacific region, because China has no intention of starting one, nor will the US, we believe. A conflict in this area would be a brief brawl, in which the weaker country is more likely to suffer.

China, the most powerful country in this region, has in the past been the strongest voice urging parties to "set aside disputes." The Philippines, Vietnam and Japan, on the contrary, were more bellicose. This is not normal.

Japan has to realize the fact that it has always been a small country compared to China, and in the future it will still only be another Vietnam or Philippines. It is better for Japan to show some respect, or it is asking for trouble.

(NaturalNews) Though the mainstream media has long since abandoned the issue, the precarious situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility in Japan is only continuing to worsen, according to a prominent Japanese official. During a recent interview, Mitsuhei Murata, the former Japanese Ambassador to both Switzerland and Senegal, explained that the ground beneath the plant's Unit 4 is gradually sinking, and that the entire structure is very likely on the verge of complete collapse.

This is highly concerning, as Unit 4 currently holds more than 1,500 spent nuclear fuel rods, and a collective 37 million curies of deadly radiation that, if released, could make much of the world completely uninhabitable. As some Natural News readers will recall, Unit 4 contains the infamous elevated cooling pool that was severely damaged following the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck on March 11, 2011.

According to the Secretary of former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, the ground beneath Unit 4 has already sunk by about 31.5 inches since the disaster, and this sinking has taken place unevenly. If the ground continues to sink, which it is expected to, or if another earthquake of even as low as a magnitude six occurs in the region, the entire structure could collapse, which would fully drain the cooling pool and cause a catastrophic meltdown.

"If Unit 4 collapses, the worse case scenario will be a meltdown, and a resultant fire in the atmosphere. That will be the most unprecedented crisis that man has ever experienced. Nobody will be able to approach the plants ... as all will have melted down and caused a big fire," said Murata during the interview. "Many scientists say if Unit 4 collapses, not only will Japan lie in ruin, but the entire world will also face serious damages."

Because there are 31 nuclear units of a similar type to Unit 4 in the U.S., the American government has been downplaying the disaster to protect itsv own reputation, alleges Murata. This is, in fact, the primary reason why so little has been reported on the severity of Fukushima following the disaster. The American empire, in other words, does not want the world, nor the American people, to know that there is the possibility of literally dozens of Fukushima situations occurring on American soil, should the r

You lose if you take HongWu seriously people, just don't do it.

The article itself is true, and it shows that Japan and the US are giving a good faith effort to tamp down tensions, but it doesn't change the capabilities that exist to respond to force. The US is speaking softly, but it still carries a big stick.

Just a note, those two carriers are still in the region :)

Pfffftttt
Those carriers are sitting ducks if we decide to use the DF-21D.

Stop overrating your military, didn't you learn your lesson in the Korean War.

Go pick some third world country to bomb so you can thump your chest in victory.
For all the boasting the US don't have balls to fight countries like China or Russia.

The US military is nothing special, it's been beaten before and the only reason it's 'feared' is because of brainwashing propaganda from the western media about how 'invincible' the US military is.

It's a tiger against rag tag militaries like Iraq which is barely a military. But only a barking puppy against China and Russia.

Even against Iraq or Afghanistan the US wants to drag EU countries to war. The mighty US can't handle it alone?

They are too afraid of death and can only drop bombs on civilians from far away. The most cowardly nation on earth for sure. China would destroy the U.S. in a real war.

When US couldn't beat the Vietcongs in the jungle they use agent orange to spray them out. Fighting a Guerilla warfare scared the sh!t out of them. These days they fly drones from thousands of miles away just to avoid fighting on the mountains.

I sincerely hope your countrymen believe what you write, because that will mean less American casualties should the Chinese decide to force our hand.

We're talking about war, not a game you fool. Since when does fairness matter?

Just another know nothing fifth column cheerleader heckling the West on the Western invented internet from the comforts of his western home.

Yes fairness and justice has no meaning to Americans such as yourself. Using a lie to invade a country, it doesn't matter involving other countries to fight your dirty war. The famous Bush quote: if you are not with us you are against us. It's good being a coward even if the US possesses very powerful weapons against a bunch of shepherds.
