FBI plans to appoint representative in Dhaka

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States has planned to appoint a permanent representative in Dhaka, who would assist Bangladeshi authorities in joint investigative endeavours.

The plan for appointing a permanent representative was discussed with Bangladesh government officials, including Home Minister MK Alamgir and Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandaker, during the visit of Michael S Welch, FBI Assistant Director for International Operations.

A press release of the US embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday said Welch was in Dhaka this week to meet with government and law enforcement officials and discuss ongoing collaborative efforts to counter transnational crime and terrorism.

During his visit, it said Welch met the home minister and the police chief, among other officials.

“The FBI and its counterpart Bangladesh law enforcement agencies maintain strong ties in the fight against global criminal networks and have a strong record of engagement in joint training and capacity-building efforts,” the press release said.

The FBI currently maintains a Legal Attaché representative in more than 75 cities around the world, working at the invitation of the partner country to promote rule of law efforts.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is discussing with Bangladesh a proposal to post a permanent representative in Dhaka.

The issue was discussed during the Dhaka visit of a senior FBI official, Assistant Director of its International Operations Division, Michael S. Welch.

During his stay in Dhaka this week, Welch met Bangladesh Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir and Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandaker and other senior officials, said an US embassy press release in Dhaka.

But it did not provide the exact dates of Welch’s visit to Dhaka, perhaps in keeping with the tradition of secrecy in movement that is followed in such agencies.

“To further underscore the FBI’s commitment to partnering with the people of Bangladesh and promote the rule of law, Assistant Director Welch discussed plans for the FBI to soon post a permanent representative in Dhaka, who will continue efforts to assist Bangladeshi authorities in joint investigative endeavours and subject matter expert exchanges,” the release said.

The FBI maintains a Legal Attaché representative in more than 75 countries around the world, who liaise with local law enforcement agencies to fight crime. These representatives are posted at the invitation of the national governments.

The press release says the agency maintains ‘strong ties’ with Bangladesh law enforcement agencies in the fight against global criminal networks and have a strong record of engagement in joint training and capacity-building efforts.

In recent years, the US agencies have taken particular interest in Bangladesh in their global fight against Islamist terrorism.

.
Its good for the relation. But their activities should be marked. As they often send CIA agents naming other organization.
As they dont match with us they cant do active works like what they are doing in Egypt and Syria. Its a big relief.
But they can do things just by spending some money.

.
No don't even think about it. US will control us from the inside like this

.
we dont need FBI help as dont have crime like that

our police certainly is well educated enough and able I believe. But certainly co-operation with them will teach us to bring crime to a new understandings and teach us methods. As long as they poke their nose in internal stuff, I gues joint investigation had it's advantages. This is a world is soon becoming a global village. You better as well accept it sooner than later. (No offense to anyone =D )
