Taliban leader 'flees Pakistan'

Maulana Fazlullah commands the loyalty of many militants in Swat
One of the most wanted Taliban leaders in Pakistan has escaped to Afghanistan and is planning new attacks on Pakistani forces, he has told the BBC.

Maulana Fazlullah founded the Swat Taliban to enforce a hardline version of Islamic law.

The government at first accepted his demands, but later accused the militants of reneging on a peace deal and sent troops into the valley.

Maulana Fazlullah was said by officials to have been wounded or killed in July.

Threats

"I have reached Afghanistan safely," Maulana Fazlullah told BBC Urdu.

"We are soon going to launch full-fledged punitive raids against the army in Swat."

The voice was recognisably Maulana Fazlullah's - he has a very distinct way of pronouncing words.

I have spoken to him on several occasions and met him twice.

Maulana Fazlullah was calling from an Afghan number and sounded in good spirits when he called on Monday.

He said that those claiming success for the Swat operation should try to prevent drone attacks and the US security firm Blackwater from operating in Pakistan.

He issued a warning to the North West Frontier Province's information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain.

"The authorities should beware, especially Mian Iftikhar Hussain, whose fate will be like that of Najibullah," he warned, referring to Dr Najibullah who was Afghan president before the Taliban hanged him in 1996 when they took Kabul.

Talking about US President Barack Obama's Afghan policy, Maulana Fazlullah said there was no need for the US to send in more troops.

"Hundreds of thousands of Pakistani soldiers are already involved in furthering the US agenda in the region," he said.

'Boost for militants'

Maulana Fazlullah has been incommunicado for several months.

During this time a number of reports had circulated about his death or capture by the military.

These had gained credence after Pakistani authorities said he was fatally wounded in the army operation.

The Taliban denied reports that he had been injured or was close to death.

His return is likely to be a morale booster for the increasingly beleaguered Taliban in Pakistan.

But it appears unlikely that his militants will be able to take the fight to the army, so soon after being soundly defeated in Swat.

The Taliban are also on the run in their main stronghold in South Waziristan, where the Pakistani military recently launched a major offensive.

NATO, ISAF and Afghans should be able to find him and hand him over to Pakistan.

If not then the NATO, ISAF and Afghans 'NEED TO DO MORE'

Buddy even though i don't appreciate your posts against India..I really appreciate your sense of Humor..Good one buddy..You really made my day

I know the primary argument that will be made here is that 'NATO needs to do more'.

However, do also think about what Fazlullah finding sanctuary in Afghanistan means in the larger picture.

Who is giving him sanctuary and allowing him to plot and launch attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan?

Some of the Afghan Taliban factions of course.

This is why some of us have argued that a sudden US withdrawal from Afghanistan, without stabilizing it, will have severe repercussions for Pakistan. The Afghan Taliban are ideologicaly identical to the Pakistani Taliban, and will end up supporting the Pakistani terrorists the same way they gave shelter to Al Qaeda and OBL who caused 911.

Well said. But now I am waiting for someone to come and say that Nato and US has given him shelter

Afterall the 'angels' that the Afghan Taliban are, they disassociate themselves from the TTP  Another nail in the coffin of the 'good taliban' theory? Perhaps. But ofcourse lets not underestimate the ability of the 'good taliban' lovers to defend them.

Hey everything will be just fine and dandy after the US withdraws :D

I suppose that is a possibility, that he ends up being sheltered by the same people that Pakistan alleges are sheltering Brahamdegh Bugti.

However, Afghan Taliban commanders such as Qari Ziaur Rehman have been shown to support the Pakistani Taliban. QZR reportedly brought in a thousand fighters from Afghanistan to help Faqir Mohammed in Bajaur when the first Bajaru Op was launched last year.

He has also made blatant claims of continuing to send Taliban into Bajaur to attack Pakistani forces:

"In a telephone conversation on Wednesday, a militant linked to Rahman said that now that they had control of Nuristan, the militants are "marching towards Mohmand and Bajaur to help their fellow Taliban fighting against Pakistani troops", referring to two tribal agencies across the border."

Now that article claims that this new aggresiveness of attacking Pakistan from Konar are a result of the US pulling out of these more remote and sparsely populated regions, and there may be truth to that, and I think that if the Indians are invovled in supporting some factions of the Taliban, then Fazlullah's operations will be well financed.

BUT, it still means that there are Afghan Taliban that are willing to tolerate these Pakistani terrorists, they are willign to tolerate money and support from India for the sake of spreading their evil ideology in Pakistan, and therfore a sudden withdrawal of the US does not serve Pakistan's interests.

And who are sheltering Brahamdegh Bugti.????? :)

In this game we have all anti-Pakistan getting togather just like all criminal gangs get togather because their aim is one.

He could be hiding in one of the Indian consulates in Jilalabaad.

How do you expect US and NATO forces to handover Fazlullah. They are on a run themselves.

Fazlullah escapes to Afghanistan, vows revenge

ISLAMABAD: The head of the Taliban in Swat valley, Maulana Fazlullah, has said that he has escaped the army and is now in Afghanistan.

Maulana Fazlullah told BBC Urdu that he had reached Afghanistan safely and will soon launch full-fledged punitive raids against the army in Swat.
He said those claiming success of the Swat operation should try and prevent drone attacks and the US security firm Blackwater from operating in Pakistan.

The cleric founded the Taliban in Swat which sought to enforce a hard-line version of Sharia law in the region.

He warned the authorities, especially NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, of further attacks.

Maulana Fazlullah has been incommunicado for several months after authorities said he was mortally wounded in the army operation.

On Monday the US embassy denied reports that the US ‘has shifted Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Chief Hakimullah Mehsud and the other Taliban leadership to Afghanistan.’

The report also alleged that the US is backing the militants fighting against the Pakistan Army in South Waziristan Agency.

The embassy said these allegations are false and malicious. The United States supports the decisive military actions being taken by Pakistan military forces against militants in South Waziristan and elsewhere. Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States are working together against insurgents who seek to destabilize or kill innocent civilians.—DawnNews
