i agree. although, i don't think that he would have to be persuaded, but instead the bill will have to be changed. his constituency and the demography he represents is unarguably the most significant when it comes to war on terror.

it goes a little deeper than just civil society. a recent poll conducted last year in pakistan before its general elections shows that 84% of pakistanis want shariah law to be implemented in their country.

as of now stopping religiosity in pakistan is impossible. the need of the moment is the stop armed resistance. that is the first step. once you stop people from doing jihad against the state of pakistan, the war on terror has been won. the change in the mindset of the people of pakistan to want a secular state with no religious affiliation will take centuries. it is a very slow evolving process.

the bill can be passed but the need for all parties conference was to show unanimity, especially on this issue. the enemy we are fighting is a "very" small minority in pakistan, but the one that is not afraid the kill a 100 children and then blow itself. we have to stop that ideology from spreading and religious scholars hold the most sway. that is their constituency and you can not afford to lose them in this fight. marginalizing that community will be a blunder.

his constituency is fighting the taliban in reality. there have been numerous attempts on his life by the taliban. he represents a class that agrees with the taliban's notion of wanting pakistan run by shariah law, but disagrees with the taliban's stance of armed resistance and jihad against pakistan army and its institutions.

maulana wants to stay within the system. he accepts democracy, the constitution, and the supremacy of armed forces of Pakistan. he is a an extremely important individual.

he is defeating the narrative of armed resistance, which is what you want. now if you want him to stop wanting shariah law, that is impossible. the country we are talking about is the "Islamic republic of pakistan." 84% of the population want shariah law.

From filing a FIR to getting the dispute resolved takes generation and not to mention the huge sums of money that will be wasted in the process. In such situation it is very easy to sell shariah laws for people think these laws will enable them to live a normal life in Pakistan. It is perception, and it is working so well because of the absolute failure of our justice system.

you are pettifogging the issue. the justice system is poor in pakistan and so is in almost every developing country. even in developed countries you see a dissatisfaction with the justice system with the recent riots in US. now the united kingdom's justice system works exceptionally well relative to the rest of the world. ICM opinion poll conducted by the guardian reveals that 40% of british muslims want shariah law in the united kingdom.
