Iraqi woman, 20, dies; police in Arizona say father ran her overNovember 2, 2009 7:59 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- A 20-year-old woman from Iraq has died in an Arizona hospital, nearly two weeks after her father, police say, ran her over with a car because she had become "too Westernized."

Noor Faleh Almaleki died Monday of injuries suffered when she was run over October 20 in a parking lot in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria, Arizona, police there said. Authorities said they expect to change the aggravated assault charge against her father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 48, to more severe counts after meetings with prosecutors, Peoria police announced.

Peoria police said Faleh Hassan Almaleki believed his daughter had become "too Westernized" and had abandoned "traditional" Iraqi values. Peoria police spokesman Mike Tellef told CNN the family moved to the Phoenix area in the mid-1990s, and Almaleki was unhappy with his daughter's style of dress and her resistance to his rules.

After the incident, Almaleki's father drove to Mexico, abandoning his vehicle in Nogales, Peoria police said. He then made his way to Mexico City and boarded a plane to Britain, where authorities denied him entry into the country and put him on a plane back to the United States, police said.

A friend of the daughter, Amal Edan Khalaf, 43, also suffered serious injuries in the attack, police said. Almaleki faces a separate aggravated assault charge in connection with her injuries.

He is currently held in Phoenix, with bail has been set at $5 million, Tellef said.

Such a tragedy!!!

There is a saying "You can take a boy out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the boy".

Immigrants to the US / western countries need to realize that when they move searching for a better life their children will a be citizen of that country, and pick up those values and try to assimilate. If you want to keep all the traditional values you have, its best to stay home.

If you don't want your children to become "too westernized" then go back home to Iraq or whichever country you are from. You cannot wish to have your family in a western country and assume that they will have eastern values. This beautiful girl had to lose her life because her father wanted to oppress her, like he would have done in Iraq.

I saw this a couple of days ago but couldn't bring myself to post it here. It reeks too much of "honor killings" and all else that too often clouds western perceptions of Islam.

She was, indeed, beautiful and that father I pray will suffer all the personal hell that he deserves.

What I find heinous is his need to escape. I suppose he expected a hero's welcome elsewhere but knew he'd have no such fair trial in America.

Arizona has a death penalty. Let's hope it's used here.:hang2:

Nobody is more deserving.

Thanks.:usflag:

^^^^ Of course it's real. It doesn't happen every day here in the US but it has been happening a few times a year. Here's one from early in the year in Texas:

Lewisville cab driver had been investigated for previous abuse

11:47 PM CST on Wednesday, January 9, 2008

By TANYA EISERER, SCOTT FARWELL and SCOTT GOLDSTEIN / The Dallas Morning News

Sarah Said's final phone call rang into the Irving police dispatcher about 7:30 p.m. on New Year's Day: "I'm dying, I'm dying, I'm dying ..."

About an hour later, a man walked up to an orange cab parked at the Omni Mandalay Hotel in Irving. He discovered carnage – the bullet-shredded bodies of 17-year-old Sarah and 18-year-old Amina Said, honor students and athletes at Lewisville High School.

Almost immediately, police issued an arrest warrant for the girls' father, 50-year-old Yaser Said, an Egyptian-born cab driver who family members said was given to fits of violence, threats and gun-waving rants about how Western culture was corrupting the chastity of his daughters.

In the week since their murders, friends and relatives on Patricia Said's side of the family say they have been haunted by that final phone call, a cry for help that went unanswered for years. They say Mr. Said physically and emotionally abused his children.

Well, who knows what trouble the girl was causing. She could have been flouting herself and being very, very disrespectful. Still, she didn't deserved to be killed. We don't really need to know any other details to decide whether or not her murder was "justified". It wasn't. End of story. Don't you agree? Or do you think that she may have done something that justifies her father's actions?

The young girl who ran away from her parents in Ohio to Florida was fearful because she had converted to Christianity. The Florida courts have sent her back to Ohio. We'll see how she makes out with HER father.

Runaway teen Christian convert returned to Ohio

October 27, 2009 3:07 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- A runaway teen who said her father threatened to kill her for converting from Islam to Christianity has been returned from Florida to Ohio, but not yet to her family, her mother's lawyer said Tuesday.

Rifqa Bary, 17, is in the custody of Franklin County Children Services while other issues in the case are settled, attorney Roger Weeden said.

"We're very happy that Rifqa is back where she should be, close to her parents," Weeden said. "The allegations of abuse and neglect were unfounded. Now some unification can begin."

A Florida judge ruled earlier this month in favor of her parents, Mohamed and Aysha Bary, who had requested that their daughter be transferred to Ohio.

The teen's attorney, John Stemberger, who leads a Christian advocacy organization, opposed the move.

The teen left her family in Columbus, Ohio, in July and took refuge in the home of a minister in Orlando, Florida. She was later moved into foster care after she said in an affidavit that her Muslim father had threatened her after finding out about her conversion. Her father has denied the allegation.

To all those who annex all such events with ISLAM...

Brothers, There is a difference between ISLAM and present day MUSLIMS...

What is a religion? how many of us know that? what a religion tries to bring to people?

Religion always tries to show the right path to those who seek guidence, no religion of the world teaches human slaughter, prostitution, boozing, corruption and all the traits which could be attributed to the evil.

tell me, does Christianity teach christians to kill humans? or drink alchohl? or have illegal sexual relationships?

the answer is a big "NO" , but u can see around you, its happening in the USA the most in the world. why? because people have very little concern about what religion says.

In my humble opinion its the traditional values and customs which drive us to commit such crimes, do u think a christian Iraqi wouldn't have done that? brothers, its a wrong perception to attribute the wrongs done by a person to the religion he is born with.

besides this, tell me how many of the revert muslims have commited such crimes? i see no examples, u know why? because they are muslims by choice, not by birth. isn't it a proof that its not Islam which should be accused of such barbarism, rather, its the social background which makes us so intollerant.

So please, feel the responsibility when u r posting something somewhere which is likely to reachout to many people, if your intent is to misguide people, then it may serve your cause, but if you have the intention to enlighten others with a positive attitude then please think a 100 times what you are going to post.

I'm sure this makes some sense to all concerned...

It almost made sense except you "slipped" up with the quote above. Oh, well. Sometimes it's hard to stay on message.....

oh am not saying the murder was justified but it just seemed a bit vague and weird to say she was "too westernised"

why are they in the us in the first place then?

why are they in the us in the first place then?

Look, the US has some excellent economic opportunities that attract immigrants. Unfortunately, the culture of freedom in the typical US community, and especially the High School with its raging hormones, is too much of a shock for some immigrants who have come from conservative traditional cultures. It is only a very small number whose stories turn out like this. Probably more people in the USA are killed annually by lightning than by honor killings. However, in recent years, when the rare honor killing does occur in the USA, it usually involves a Muslim family.

I think you make some valid points. It's one thing to express outrage and genuine concern, and quite another to "make hay".

It's easy to spot who is doing what.

A Tamil father in Toronto lost it in 2007, and he wasn't a Muslim.

Native Yanks also get unhinged from time to time, and time again ...

Each is a tragedy. And it goes without saying that every murder is an uttermost "dishonour", whatever the motive.

Every act of "making hay out of pain" is equally dishonourable.

Condolences to the family (excluding daddy himself of course).

Fathima Rifqa Bary controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :

" Fathima Rifqa Bary is an American teenager of Sri Lankan descent who drew international attention in 2009 when she ran away from home and claimed that her Muslim parents might kill her for having converted to Christianity.[1] Two independent investigations in Ohio and Florida found no credible evidence that her life was in danger.[1][2][3] Ms. Bary's case has become a focal point in a culture clash between Evangelical Christians and Muslim Americans. Muslim sources say it is motivated by Islamophobia; Christian sources say they fear for Bary's life because they believe Islamic Sharia law mandates honor killing for apostasy. "

&

"Law enforcement investigations
Bary was taken into custody by Florida child welfare authorities while an investigation proceeded. On September 14, 2009 a Florida court ruled that it found no credible evidence that Bary's life or well-being had been threatened by her family.[1][2][3] The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) report states with respect to the allegations of physical and verbal abuse that they found no credible evidence of such abuse.[1] In the report Mr. Bary states that he did pick up Rifqa's Laptop to throw it but did not throw it due to the cost of the laptop.[1] For these items they relied on the authorities in Ohio.[1] The FDLE report also listed several statements by Rifqa Bary which were not supported by evidence.[1] Rifqa Bary stated to them that her father did not know about the true nature of her cheerleading, the FDLE report states that pictures of her in uniform were prominently displayed in the Bary home. Furthermore Mr. Bary gave permission when Mrs. Bary would not.[/COLOR][/B]

[1] Rifqa Bary stated that a teacher offered her refuge due to the abuse she suffered. The FDLE report states that the teacher was unaware of any abuse, and was concerned about parties, with alcohol consumption, which were thrown by Rilvan Bary (Rifqa's older brother) when the parents were away.[1] The FDLE report also stated that they did not investigate anyone in the larger Ohio Muslim community.[1] The FDLE report has been criticized by John Guandolo, an Ex FBI agent writing for the Center for Security Policy who states that they think that under islamic law apostasy is a capital offense.[1][10] The FDLE responds that "FDLE conducted a thorough investigation of this situation."[10] On October 13, Orange County Judge Daniel P. Dawson ruled that he would return Bary to Ohio pending immigration status settlement.[9] Emergency custody will continue in Ohio.[11]"

PS: What extreemist Muslim family would attempt to kill their daughter whilst simultaneously allowing her to cheerlead?

The whole story is a gross exaggeration - You'r a little closer to the truth...

.
Few things to say here.

There is no doubt that what the father did was wrong. But, to stick this to the whole culture is not only a blanket statement but derogatory. Let me just say this. If a white American kills a woman, it's the individual. If a muslim does it, it's the culture. Statistically speaking, rapes, domestic violence, and murders are far more common in US than Muslim countries. If they happen less often in Muslim countries, how can you stereotype them? Surely, if its their culture, but it happens more often in your country, surely by pure logic its your culture too.

Secondly, if American members mind answering me, what is the difference between honour killings and the killings of women (sometimes a result of domestic violence) you see in US which are more common than honour killings? Why is one seen as much worse than other? I believe its just a name difference and thats about.

Lastly, that story about Christian convert is complete crap. Her father never threatened her. If he wanted to kill her, he would have done it because last time she was with him, he knew she had converted. Additionally, the family allowed her to be a cheerleader and gave her a lot of freedom. This is basically only a muslim family by name who do not really do anything religious.
