Lashkar torches Taliban hideouts in Bajaur

PESHAWAR: A lashkar of local tribes on Thursday torched several suspected hideouts of pro-Taliban extremists in Mandal area of Bajaur Agency.

The local tribes in Mandal have launched a crackdown against the Taliban for establishing peace in the area. Meanwhile, government and private organisations and shopping centres resumed business in Khar and adjoining areas after law and order returned to normal.

Residents of Duadzai area in Peshawar’s suburbs on Thursday organised a lashkar (volunteers’ militia) to curb terrorist activities in the area. The lashkar of 300 men, along with the police, has started patrolling the areas between Mamunkhatki and Mathra Pul for maintaining peace.

Residents in other parts of the provincial metropolis and its surrounding areas have already formed lashkars for maintaining peace. staff report/app

20 militants, three Lashkar men die in Bajaur

KHAR: Twenty militants and three Lashkar men were killed and several others injured when fierce fighting erupted between volunteers of the armed tribal force and the Taliban in Charmang area of Nawagai Tehsil in Khar subdivision of the violence-hit Bajaur Agency on Sunday.

Sources said that firing between the militants positioned on the hilltops and armed men of the tribal Lashkar continued throughout the day in Charmang, Kotki and Chinar areas of Nawagai Tehsil. Both the parties targeted each other’s positions with heavy weapons in these areas that left 20 militants and three Lashkar men dead and many others injured.

Gunship helicopters and jets also blitzed Rashkai and Loisam areas of Khar subdivision and Charmang, Kotki and Chinar areas of Nawagai Tehsil, destroying several hideouts of militants. Also, the security forces pounded positions of militants in these areas with artillery shells.

On the other hand, the Lashkar torched seven houses of militants in different areas of Charmang, one of the strongholds of the militants, in Nawagai Tehsil. In retaliation, the militants also set on fire three houses of Lashkar elders, destroying them completely.

However, the names of the affected elders and reports about the casualties could not be ascertained. Meanwhile, a Jirga held in Charmang decided to expedite action against the militants and miscreants. Besides elders and Maliks, thousands of Lashkar men also attended the Jirga.

The Jirga resolved that the tribesmen would extend full support to the security forces in the ongoing operation against the militants. They vowed that the tribal armed force would attack those found involved in militancy and other criminal activities.

Tribal Lashkars in Mamond Tehsil and Mandal area of Salarzai subdivision also continued operation against the militants in their respective areas. They destroyed several houses of suspected militants by setting them ablaze.

FATA stresses inclusion in security talks
By Bakhtawar Mian
Tuesday, 14 Oct, 2008

ISLAMABAD: Parliamentarians from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas have warned the deteriorating situation in FATA could further worsen if they were not taken into confidence by the government with regard to any move in their areas.

They said that as representatives of the areas they know better about the ground realities of Tribal Areas and their suggestions would be of great value adding that bypassing them would lead to no results.

In their views, the situation in Bajaur, Swat, Khyber Agency and Waziristan have been deteriorating every day because of the wrong tackling of the issue by the government. Things will have never come to this pass had we been taken into confidence, they said.

The FATA representatives termed the ongoing debate on the issue as a positive development and hoped it would result in a tangible solution for the issue. We have long been asking for such a debate, the parliamentarians said. They, however, warned that the parliamentary debate would be a futile exercise if their views were ignored.

MNA from Bajaur Agency Shaukatullah said they had been asking the government since long to stop unilateral action in FATA and include them in any decision about their areas but it has always fallen on deaf ears. We know about the ground realities of our areas, he said. And we have the capability to solve them, he said.

According to him, those fighting the government in Tribal Areas include native people, those from the Punjab and some foreigners as well. He said that unemployment, under development, poverty and lack of basic amenities are also the reasons behind the growing militancy in FATA. They are simple people and are easily attracted by religion.

He termed the army operation as unplanned adding it disturbs the civilian population more than the Taliban and their supporters. The latter, he said, are not stationed at the same location but move from place to place whereas the civilians are permanently residing in their specific areas.

An MNA from North Waziristan Muhammad Kamran Khan said the issue could be resolved through talks. Wars and operations have never been the solution of any issue, he said. In the beginning, the conflict was only limited to some specific areas but now it has engulfed the whole of Frontier, he said warned the war could expand to the whole country if not tackled properly. He said that even America has been convinced that war could not solve the problem and it has showed readiness to talk with the Talibans.

He said that severe resentment and anger is found amongst the people of Waziristan due to American-led forces’ bombing of the areas time after time.

Almost every day, four or five drones enter the area and bomb civilian population. He said this interference has severely angered the people of North Waziristan and a Tribal Jirga has demanded of the government to explain why US-led forces had been openly violating their sovereignty.

KHAR: Twenty-two militants were killed and several others injured when the security forces’ artillery guns and gunship helicopters pounded the hideouts of militants in various parts of the Bajaur Agency.

Sources said the security forces targeted the hideouts of militants in Rashakai and Lowisam areas of the Khar Tehsil with artillery and gunship helicopters. “At least 10 militants were killed and several others injured in the attack,” the sources added.

Similarly, the security forces claimed to have killed 12 suspected militants in Charmang, Babra and Chenar areas of Nawagai Tehsil. On the other hand, large contingents of the security forces arrived in the agency headquarters, Khar, amid reports of a major offensive against the militants in Charmang and Mamond areas.

Earlier, the security forces, along with the volunteers of the tribal Lashkar, demolished two houses in Khar and Yusufabad. The sources said the houses belonged to the local militant commanders, Iqbal and Liaquat Yusuf. The security forces had made strict security arrangements and closed the Khar bazaar prior to the destruction of the houses. AFP adds: Officials said a curfew was imposed on Wednesday in Khar as part of the ongoing military operation.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistan's military has killed 60 militants in airstrikes on targets in the Swat Valley since Friday morning, a Pakistani army official in the area said Saturday.

Security forces using F-16 fighter jets attacked a militant stronghold that included training camps in the Puchar and Ghaat areas, from where militants are said to be operating.

Eyewitnesses, however, said militants were among the dead.

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's security forces have arrested about 168 foreign militants from the northwestern tribal regions in the past two days, military sources said on Saturday.

The foreign militants have been arrested from Darra Adamkhel of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and other tribal regions, said a military statement.

The security forces arrested 38 foreigners, who were riding three vehicles, from check-posts set up in NWFP capital Peshawar and Darra Adamkhel.

Besides, 30 more militants were arrested from various parts of the NWFP, and Uzbeks and Afghans were among the arrested.

The foreign militants, who are believed to enter Pakistan through porous Pakistan-Afghanistan border, have been involved in the increasing Taliban insurgency in Pakistan's tribal regions.

The Pakistani army is intensifying its military operation against militants in Bajaur tribal agency and NWFP's Swat valley.

War and peace

Saturday, October 18, 2008
As debate on terrorism and the national security situation continues in the secret session of parliament, members of opposition parties have called for an end to the use of force and the opening up of talks with militants. The JUI-F chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has offered to mediate between the government and militants. Faced with fierce criticism over its policies, the government has said it may reconsider them. The ongoing discussion at the joint sitting of both houses coincides with a peace accord in the Kurram agency, mediated by tribal elders. Under it, the warring Turi and Bangash tribes, locked for months in a sectarian conflict that has claimed hundreds of victims, have agreed to re-open roads in the area, exchange prisoners, release kidnapped persons and, with any luck, end violence. For months food has not been reaching the upper parts of Kurram agency, adding to the suffering of thousands in Parachinar and other towns. People have been forced to travel through Afghanistan to reach Peshawar. Now that peace seems to have won over war, their plight will hopefully improve.

The triumph of peace, over conflict, is almost always welcome. Certainly, this is the case in Kurram where too much blood has been senselessly spilled. But we must question whether the call for dialogue made by opposition figures in parliament is necessarily a wise one. The problem is that, in the past, talks with militants have repeatedly been violated by them. The most recent example of this came only weeks ago in Swat. A deal under which key figures of Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah Mohammadi were released in return for peace was broken within months by militants. This has happened too in Bajaur, in Waziristan and elsewhere. That the roar of gunfire has ceased in Kurram is good news. Negotiations seem to have worked in halting the battle between local Shia and Sunni tribes. But elsewhere in our northern areas, the nature of the war between militants and security forces is rather different. These elements threaten the very existence of Pakistan; they have proved themselves to be unreliable, committed only to pursuing their own self-interest. For these reasons, the strategy to be adopted against them needs to be carefully considered. The parliamentarians must keep in mind that peace may not always be preferable to war, particularly when such a peace means more violence in the future. These factors must be carefully weighed and all sides put forward at the debate before any final conclusion is reached.

Helicopter gunships, fighter jets and artillery pounded militant hideouts in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan, killing 18 rebels, officials said, reported a private TV channel on Monday.

The strikes were carried out at militants’ hideouts across Bajaur, where troops and extremists have been locked in fierce fighting since August.

Helicopter gunships, jet fighters and artillery hit militants’ hideouts, killing 18 militants and wounding more than a dozen others, a senior security official said.

Local administration officials have confirmed the deaths of 18 Taliban fighters in Monday’s offensive.

The jets struck militant positions at several places in the Charmang and Loisam sub-districts of Bajaur Agency, considered strongholds of the local Taliban militants. A number of militant hideouts were destroyed in the bombing, the channels reported.

Meanwhile, the security forces continued offensive against pro-Taliban militants and killed another seven miscreants and wounded 10 others at Shah Dheri in restive Tehsil Kabal in Swat district.

According to Media Information Centre (MIC) Swat Press release, seven miscreants were killed in exchange of fire with the security forces in Shah Sherai Tehsil Kabal.

The security forces retaliated and effectively engaged militants’ locations from where they were fired upon. As result of heavy firing, seven miscreants were reportedly dead while another ten sustained injuries. However, the security forces suffered no loss.

The security forces have intensified operation against militants in troubled areas of Swat as the troops on Sunday have destroyed the ‘Hujra’ of a militant commander Alamgir that was being used as a den in Barthana area of Tehsil Matta. Resultantly, at least 25 militants were killed and scores injured in this incident.

Our Staff Reporter from Peshawar adds: The arrested Afghan and Uzbek nationals Sunday confessed that they were involved in some major terrorist bids by following the instigation of Indian secret agencies.
