Visa scandal : Malik in UK to ‘apologise’ to British officials

LONDON: Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Affairs Rehman Malik arrived here on Monday on a surprise visit to apologise to the British authorities for an alleged visa scandal, Daily Times has learnt.

The visit was unscheduled and was planned last minute as no officials from the Presidency and the Prime Minister’s House were aware of it. A source privy to the visit said Malik would meet the British officials and would apologise in this regard. He would also brief them about investigation into the alleged visa scandal. Source said that British intelligence agency MI6 had already started an investigation in this regard. The Olympics squad from Pakistan is being monitored by security officials. President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had ordered Malik to visit Britain and assure the British authorities that Pakistan would take all possible measures to bring culprits to justice.

Talking to Daily Times, President Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said, “It is a serious issue and should be dealt on priority basis." When asked about Rehman Malik's visit to the UK, Babar said, "I'm unaware of his visit. He [Rehman Malik] had a meeting with President Zardari in Karachi. They might have discussed this issue but I don't know anything about it."

The Sun has claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf personally ordered Rehman Malik to arrest the criminals behind the Olympics visa racket. In its latest report, The Sun said, "An aide said Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and President Asif Ali Zardari were appalled after we exposed corrupt officials offering potential terrorists the chance to sneak into Britain with the Pakistani Olympic squad."

If sun story is wron and if pakistan is suing sun that means whole fake visa episode is wrong but by rehman malik is in uk to apologies for it and brief British intelligence about ongoing investigations in pakistan on the same case.Something dont fit right here.

Good going, I had already rendered a detailed analysis on the previous thread as to how this story seems to have been doctored to suit the tabloid's sensationalist ideals. Here's a short summary of my ideas.

1) The passport cannot be issued by any one or few men, there is a proper syste with numerous checks and balance, the application passes through various phases of scrutiny and imagining you had to bribe everyone along the way, your passport would cost more than your entire liquid assets, I guarantee you.

2) The Sun contends that since the visa was issued, hence it COULD be used to smuggle people into UK on Olympic visas along with support staff.
Firstly, the staff will carry blue government visas, not green ones.
Secondly, the number and names of staff were sent to the Olympic Committee and UK Border Control Agency 3 months in advance.
Lastly, just because the 'Sun Man' got a fake passport doesn't mean he would want to carry out a suicide attack on the olympics, maybe he just wants to see the olympics from the inside, or smuggle cocoa from Ghana in his Anus, who fu**ing knows? There's a million things you can do rather than just attack the olympics.

The visa of the 'Sun's man' is true, and NADRA and interior ministry have released details of that passport, the guys name, his fathers name etc etc.

He is a dual national since 2003 i think, and his Place of birth in Pakistani passport and British passport is different.!!

ISLAMABAD: We trust Pakistan’s passport issuance system and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), said British High Commissioner to Pakistan Adam Thomson on Thursday.

Commenting on the recent passport scam claim by the British tabloid The Sun at Islamabad Press Club, Thomson said that sneaking into an Olympics squad through illegal means is impossible.

“We are satisfied with the passport issuance system of Pakistan and Nadra,” he said, adding that no country is free of defects.
The Sun had earlier claimed to have broken into a crime ring which was issuing fake passports and visas, giving potential terrorists a chance to sneak into Britain along with Pakistan’s Olympic delegation.

Responding to those who wish to acquire a British passport, Thomson said interested Pakistanis should not seek help of unofficial agents. “The system in place at the British embassy is very simple and it can be contacted for assistance,” he said.
The British High Commissioner also mentioned that around 4,000 people tried to get the British passport through fake documents last year but were caught.

When this new E-passport system and the NADRA system was being made, the guy who was the chief of it all had to give a final briefing to the British ambassador, the US ambassador, Pakistani officials and some more people. After the briefing, when there was a question and answer session, the British ambassador remarked that this is the most advanced system he has seen, and he cannot understand it quite well. So, he called in another database team from UK for this purpose.

The NADRA system is used by 12 countries worldwide, including 2-3 EU members. This is one of the most advanced systems in the world. No way you can replicate a Pakistani passport just like that.

The story in British tabloid Sun about alleged passport scam was a conspiracy to bring Pakistan into bad name, he said at news conference here Saturday. He said investigations into the matter are almost complete and these prove that Pakistan's National Database & Registration Authority NADRA and passport systems are intact.

He said central figure of the story Asad Ali got Pakistani passport in 2000 and went to UK where he got British passport and dual nationality. He visited Pakistan on British passport and visa and his movements were recorded during visit to NADRA and Passport Office.

He said as Ali Assad colluded with the Sun in a bid to malign Pakistan‚ "we are writing to British Government for his deportation to face criminal proceedings. The facts gathered during investigations have also been sent to the British newspaper through Pakistan High Commission in London. In first instance‚ Pakistan would lodge a complaint with National Press Trust of UK‚ which can also refer case for libel proceedings."

On travel agent Abid Chaudhry‚ Minister said he is being interrogated by FIA but he has not been arrested because of death of his brother.

To a question‚ Malik said two officials of NADRA and two of Passport Office are in custody for allegedly take speed money. He rejected that scam is an effort to sabotage proposed $66 million agreement between NADRA and Kenya. (APP)

Pakistan’s government has launched a counter-offensive against a British tabloid that ‘uncovered’ the ‘London Olympics visa scam’ after investigations into the issue apparently showed that the story was fictitious.
Terming the story “propaganda,” the federal cabinet decided on Wednesday to file a lawsuit against the daily paper, The Sun, in British courts. A meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, approved the decision to sue the newspaper for publishing the report based on assumptions, said a source, adding that Pakistan will seek Rs10 billion in damages.
Though the cabinet has directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to halt investigations in light of its decision to file the lawsuit, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the inquiry will continue as evidence collected by FIA will help strengthen Pakistan’s case.
In his address to the media, Kaira leveled strong criticism against The Sun and turned the tables on the paper by questionings its ‘credibility.’ He added it was surprising how the newspaper did not know that NADRA has nothing to do with issuing passports.
Athletics Association Pakistan’s Secretary Khalid Mehmood also presented the record of the 38 participants due to take part in the 2012 summer games to the FIA. The investigation agency, meanwhile, has decided to release all the suspects detained earlier.
The government, however, has asked FIA to put together a complete profile of Lahore-based politician Abid Chaudhry, who, The Sun claims, is the mastermind behind the alleged scandal. The tabloid accused Chaudhry of smuggling people to London under the garb of Pakistani officials in exchange for a payment of Rs1 million.

NADRA’s rejoinder

The decision to file a lawsuit came soon after NADRA Chairman Muhammad Tariq Malik briefed the cabinet. Malik, who appeared before the cabinet along with the interior secretary and director-general of the passport office, rubbished The Sun’s claims of NADRA officials providing forged travel documents.
“The British newspaper’s story about NADRA is not based on any evidence. Upon the cabinet’s directives, NADRA will file a lawsuit against the tabloid for maligning Pakistan,” Malik said at a press briefing soon after the meeting.
He said NADRA can boast of being the safest registration system in the world and no unauthorized person can access the system.

The Sun’s ‘man’

The Sun, in its story, had claimed that its “man” had been able to get a Pakistani passport on someone else’s particulars. Based on this premise, it said, the “man” could have gotten a visa for the Olympic Games to be held in London through some “corrupt” officials.
The visa, however, was never issued.
As for the claim of the “fake passport,” the charges were rubbished. According to NADRA’s database, The Sun’s “man” is named Mohammad Ali Asad s/o Mohammad Anwer Siddique. His NIC bearing number 35202-2660630-5 was issued on February 6, 2002. It was added that Asad, a former reporter for Daily Khabrain, had immigrated to the UK earlier and had been living there for the past 8-10 years.
His British passport bearing number 506486804 was issued on October 24, 2011, and has the same name and photograph as his NIC. In a discrepancy that conversely takes place on the UK’s side of things, an incorrect place and date of birth is mentioned. Malik said that, though the British security mechanism for the same is quite intricate too, the authorities there were not able to nab Asad.
In any case, Asad, according to authorities, returned to Pakistan on July 8 this year as an undercover man for The Sun. He had booked a room at the Avari Hotel in Lahore from the date of his arrival till July 31.
He personally visited the NADRA office in Baghbanpura on July 10 and had his picture updated in his record. He got his own photo updated rather than getting someone else’s identity as claimed by The Sun’s story. The photo was updated after matching it with his previous photo, it was claimed by officials. On the same basis, he consequently applied for a passport on July 13 which was delivered to him on July 18, it was added. According to officials, no discrepancy took place.
