The greatest living flying ace is 95, had 222 air kills, and was shot down 16 times!

Born in 1917, Major Erich Rudorffer is a German who was a Luftwaffe fighter ace during World War II. He served the Germans for the entire war, which only a handful could say they did. Rudorffer is the 7th most successful fighter pilot in the history of air warfare.

He is currently the oldest jet fighter ace and the most successful fighting ace alive. He claimes 222 air kills and fought in all the major German theaters of war.

He flew more than 1000 combat missions during World War II and was engaged in aerial combat over 300 times. He himself was shot down 16 times and had to use his parachute 9 times.

He flew for Australia and later PAN-AM after the war. He then became a flight instructor in Germany in the late 1960s. In the 1970s he owned a gas station and he likely didn’t return to flying after that.

Valentines Day is always a special occasion for some and a day to be avoided for others, and while Westerners have their customs, they are not the same throughout the World.

Originating as a Western holiday, it was not brought to Japan until 1936, when chocolate companies were aiming for the business of foreigners.

Because the holiday was so new and alien to the Japanese, they were not sure exactly how the day usually went. When an executive at a chocolate company was translating an advertisement, he mistranslated “men” and “women” resulting in the complete opposite of what we know!

In Japan, it is now common for women to give their male friends and co-workers chocolates instead!

People started flipping one cigarette upside down in their packs because of a myth that early 'Lucky Strikes' contained marijuana!
There’s a myth that people believed that the cigarette brand "Lucky Strike" is named so because every so often a consumer of the product would have a "lucky strike", finding a marijuana joint in a pack of cigarettes.

The myth varies in how often the marijuana cigarette would be included, anywhere from one in every thousand cartons to one in every pack. It's unknown when the myth originated. One claim is it has been floating around for many years. Lucky Strike's slogan "It's Toasted" fueled belief in the myth.

Despite the popularity of the myth, there are no reliable reports of any Lucky Strike cigarette containing marijuana. The name "Lucky Strike", in reality, is only a marketing ploy, implying to customers that obtaining their brand is a "Lucky Strike".

The "It's Toasted" slogan refers to the product's tobacco being toasted instead of sun-dried, making a supposedly better-tasting product. Other myths offshoot from this one.

One of the explanations for the origin of flipping a "lucky" cigarette upside down claims the practice originated from the Lucky Strike myth; it's thought that the superstition arose from flipping the marijuana-containing cigarette upside-down in order to save it for last

Super Glue can be used to close wounds!

Before we relate this awesome fact to you, we must advise you: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! So, with that being said, did you know that Super Glue can be used to close wounds?

It was first used for this purpose back in the Vietnam War when medics would use it to close soldiers’ wounds quickly to get them back to the battlefield. It was so useful for stemming bleeding that it was credited for saving many lives back then!

Today, many use the glue for this purpose including veterinarians and professional athletes. Sealing a small wound (like a paper cut) with Super Glue can reduce pain, quickly stop bleeding, and even reduce scarring!

Although possibly useful in emergencies, experts say not to use the glue for wounds as it can cause irritation, kill skin skills, and lead to other not-so-good side effects.

Dermabond is a safer alternative to Super Glue and has been given the okay by the FDA for the purpose of wound closure.

While American novelist Anne Parrish was browsing bookstores in Paris in the 1920s, she came upon a book that was one of her childhood favorites – Jack Frost and Other Stories. She picked up the old book and showed it to her husband, telling him of the book she fondly remembered as a child. Both men began discussing the striking resemblances between each other and found many more similarities.

4. The restauranteur opened his restaurant on the same day that King Umberto was crowned King of Italy.

While test flying a 707 with Boeing executives, a pilot unexpectedly did a barrel roll. He said he was ‘selling airplanes.’
The Boeing 707 is a mid-size, four engine jet airliner built between 1958 and 1979. It has a capacity of 140 to 189 passengers. It was used for domestic, transcontinental, and transatlantic flights. It was also used for cargo and military applications.

Tex Johnson was a test pilot for the Boeing 707 and a ballsy one at that. He did a barrel roll with the Boeing 707 without previously telling the Boeing executives. When his boss rightfully asked what the hell he was doing, Johnson said “Selling airplanes.”

He showed off what the Boeing 707 could really do. Johnson wasn’t fired over the maneuver either. Boeing produced and delivered 1,011 airliners including the smaller 720 series; over 800 military versions were also produced.

As of August 2011, 10 Boeing 707s were in airline service. By August 2012, this number was down to two. Both of them are located in Iran for military purposes.

Czech immigrants looking to have their own version of the American Dream founded Monowi, Nebraska 1902. Today, what was once a robust town has dwindled down to just one person, 72-year-old Elsie Eiler.

Eiler is the last resident of Monowi. As such, she is also the mayor. And she takes her duties seriously. Ever year, she raises taxes from herself to keep Monowi’s four streetlights lit and a few other basic amenities running.

She also runs the town’s only business, the Monowi Tavern and lives in the last remaining habitable building. She grants herself a liquor license each year so she can keep the bar running and serves customers that come off the highway that runs through Monowi.
