Korean FA-50 competes with Pakistan-China developed jet in Malaysia
By Kang Seung-woo

The FA-50, the nation's first domestically developed light attack aircraft, is competing against the Pakistani-Chinese jointly manufactured JF-17 fighter for the Malaysian Air Force's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program, under which Kuala Lumpur seeks to purchase 18 jets to replace its aging MiG-29 fleet, according to sources, Sunday.

"Despite interest from a diverse group of manufacturers, the FA-50 and JF-17 are the finalists," the source said.

The FA-50 is a variant of the T-50 supersonic trainer jet, manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

Since its first deployment in October 2013, 60 FA-50s are operated by the Korean Air Force. In addition, the FA-50 has been exported to Iraq, the Philippines and Thailand.

Initially, France's Rafale, the multinational Eurofighter and the United States' F-18 were put forward for the Malaysian program, but the project has been downsized to purchasing light attack aircraft due to budget issues, giving a fighting chance to India's Tejas, Italy's M346 and Russia's Y-130.

Should the KAI win the deal, it would be a huge compensation for its failed exports to Argentina.

Despite interest from Buenos Aires, the KAI, which uses several British-made parts in the FA-50, was unable to close a deal for the sale of eight aircraft due to an arms embargo imposed by the British government on the South American country.

However, the FA-50 is reportedly behind the JF-17 in the race as the latter possesses a better mid-range weapons capacity which is a requirement of the Malaysian Air Force.

No tejas then....lol

Doesn't FA 50 use Israeli radar. The same ones used on India's Tejas. They also use the same F404 engine. Personally not fancying India's chances of selling Tejas to Malaysia, but the truth is, if Korea is an frontrunner despite Israeli avionics then India has an chance too. Especially with a team supposed to travel to India to take a look.

Gr8 news rest there is a political angle too so let’s see if Malaysia 🇲🇾 makes final decision

This is just first phase so 18 plus perhaps another 18 on next phase

does the better jet win or financing terms and the power of the nations/corporations pushing a particular jet?

oh ho? Didn't the Malaysian Air Force also evaluate the tejas? Had Malaysia said thanks but no thanks to the flying samosa so tejas go bye bye?

Yup, but FA 50 design is heavily helped by Lockheed Martin while Indian does alone

W'is tejas..

Anyway on serious note these two were logical choices for very light categery(in addition to gripen)

If tejas was a problem free plateform it would have been the most logical choice

Financial and poltical terms

Its not about jet only

The JF-17 opens up more possibilities for the Malaysians as it is a more adaptable platform, especially because they are looking for a “light attack aircraft”. That is their requirement.

The Chinese and Pakistani manufacturers have a vast array of PGM munitions for the jet. The Nigerians have acquired the jet for the CAS role, and Pakistan’s Swift Retort proved the PAF is no paper tiger when delivering PGMs in a denied airspace with potential air defense and jamming.

Add to all this the access to the PL-15E and PL-10E allows the Malaysians a third source for A2A munitions. They already have access to American and Russian systems vis a vi the Hornets and Flankers respectively.

The Koreans will probably stop at 60 F/A-50 for the Air Force and may have a limited growth plan for the jets in mind, while the PAF knows its JF-17 will be the backbone of its Air Force for decades to come. Which is why acquiring the JF-17 will mean future growth every few years for the life of the aircraft is all but assured.

The F/A-50 brings nothing new to the Malaysian Air Force, while the JF-17 buys them political influence and the ability to hedge in a multipolar world. Ultimately, it will probably be primarily a political deal. Technologically the Chinese have caught up with everything the west and the Koreans have to offer.

The one that can hinder Malaysian buy JF17 is when they see China as their threat. Latest event they said China as their big brother, so maybe some positive vibe are currently exist for possible acquisition of JF 17, but nevertheless we should wait...............

Malaysia does not view China as a threat.
