They did so in both the mechanical and electronic areas. Adding the Gondola fuel tank to increase the flight duration was one of the most visible modifications. Addition of sidewinder was another major weapons upgrade that was an unlikely marriage of US and Chinese technologies.

Today we pay tribute to an elite fighter Sqn of Pakistan Air Force - No 23 Squadron “Talons”. Raised on 16 March 1961, under the command of Sqn Ldr A.M Nazir, No 23 Squadron was initially located at Kohat and equipped with Fury aircraft. The unit was disbanded in 1964.. In 1966, the unit was reactivated at Sargodha and reloaded with the newly inducted F-6s and assigned the role of Air Defence. This Squadron has played an important role in National Defence during all contingencies.

After operating F-6s for 36 long years, No 23 Sqn converted to the F-7PGs at its home Base in March 2002. Since then, the Sqn has remained active participant of various national and international air exercise including the ATLC exercises at AL-DHAFFRA, UAE.

No 17 Squadron also has a history of deployment both in East & West Pakistan prior to 1971. The Sqn has operated F-6, F-7 and F-7PG aircraft.
