Eye on China: Antony to visit Maldives on Saturday

New Delhi: Against the backdrop of increasing influence of China in Maldives, Defence Minister AK Antony will be on a three-day visit to Male where he is scheduled to attend two programmes including the foundation stone laying ceremony of a military academy.

“On invitation of Maldivian Defence Minister Col Mohamed Nazim, the defence minister will be in Male from Saturday where he will participate in the inauguration of a military hospital and foundation stone laying ceremony of the training academy of the Maldivian National Defence Forces,” the defence ministry said in a release.

Both the projects are part of ongoing co-operation between the defence establishments of the two neighbouring countries.

In the first state visit by an Indian minister to Maldives after the regime change there, Antony is also expected to call on President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik also.

The visit comes at a time when Maldives is seen to be moving close to China which opened its embassy there in November last year.

Antony had last visited Maldives in August 2009, which was followed by high-level visits including those by its defence minister and senior officers of its defence forces.

“There have been regular exchanges and interactions between the armed forces of both sides, including conduct of joint exercises and training programmes. Both countries have also been cooperating for regular EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) surveillance,” the release said.

During the talks, both the defence ministers are expected to review ongoing defence exchanges and discuss ways to enhance military co-operation.

Defence secretary Shashi Kant Sharma, Western Naval Commander Vice-Admiral Shekhar Sinha, Director General Military Training Lt Gen SP Tanwar and DGAFMS Air Marshal DP Joshi will be accompanying Antony during the visit.

. .
why is our media getting obsessed with China?? It's looking as though if we are breathing also we have an eye on China  can't our defence minister visit our neighboring country?? Every nation wants to influence other nations, this is what China is doing & this is what India is doing, for that matter even if Bhutan can influence actions of Maldives to it's favor it will do so. So we should not be one dimensional in our thinking & should try to further our interests not just sit & see what China or any other nation is doing.

Every coutry is free to decide its forgine policy. If Maldivs want a good relation with China then its their choice and its nothing bad for india. India should only worry if some milletry base aspects arises. Looking at current political scenarios I don't think China will do something Like that. They definatly don't want India in SCS so they will refrene form such things.

Besides one thing to observe in India media from last couple of months. Everything is being connected to China. Is somebody purposefully doing this ??? ( Hint : uncle SAMs efferts to contain China ??? Indian media on payroll ??? )

. .
Last couple of months?

The Indian media has ALWAYS been whining about China. It's not the past couple of months, it is for at least the past decade.
I don't mind your opinion on Indian media. I write something I feel :D
I know it will be hard for you but you should really understand Indian people aren't obsessed with China :D
But media is lately doing something funny :D may be paid job :D

Let's get a third-party outsider opinion shall we?

How about the New York Times?

New York Times - India Measures Itself Against a China That Doesn’t Notice

It seems to be a national obsession in India: measuring the country’s economic development against China’s yardstick.

Indians, in fact, seem to talk endlessly about all things China, a neighbor with whom they have long had a prickly relationship, but which is also one of the few other economies that has had 8 percent or more annual growth in recent years.

Indian newspapers are filled with articles comparing the two countries. Indian executives refer to China as a template for development. Government officials cite Beijing, variously as a threat, partner or role model.

But if keeping up with the Wangs is India’s economic motive force, the rivalry seems to be largely one-sided.

Even the Westerners can see India's one-sided obsession with China. And this article is more than a year old so there goes your theory of it only happening in the past few months.

Opening an embassy our backyard is a cause of concern. The embassy wil allow China to snoop around big time.

Couple of problems with your logic. So any source that is from a neutral country (non-Indian and non-Chinese) about China is correct? Because I have often been told by your countrymen that Western sources are propaganda about China, and when these Western countries write about India they become wise golden words?

Secondly, yes you could say that some Indians do compare themselves to China. You guys do have a much bigger economy than us, which some day we wish to have. If we ever catch up to you in terms of economy (which I highly doubt, but if it does happen), then we will set our sights on US as our next "competitor". What is so unnatural about that?

Now a days it seems that everything that India does is a consequence of,or a reaction to,China's deeds。

These reports are created by news medias not GOI .......

They will always try to create sensationalism to increase their count .......

Being a journalist , you already know that ......

BTW how can you use Maldives against China?

No ...........We are establishing a good relationship with them so that China doesnot use them against us .......
